Chart Check [Hot 100]: Katy Perry’s ‘Never Really Over’ The Week’s Top Debut

Published: Friday 14th Jun 2019 by Rashad

Could we be bearing witness to the comeback of Katy Perry?

After her ill-received fifth studio album, 2017’s ‘Witness,’ the 34-year-old took to press just 8 months ago to announce she was taking an extended break from music to focus on other ventures (see: shoe line, ‘American Idol,’ family, etc.).  That break was short-lived as by the end of May she was unveiling news of her single, ‘Never Really Over’ – an announcement met with surprising fanfare.

Just a day after the May 31 premiere of its accompanying, Philippa Price-directed music video the tune had already zoomed to the top 10 of iTunes and Spotify respectively.  Dominating radio with a historic opening week (as we reported here), a full week of streaming (15.8 million) added to the the handsome mix of sales (31,000) and radio airplay has proven itself lucrative for the Zedd-produced cut as it made its Hot 100 debut at #15.

Gifting the songstress the 19th top 20 hit of her career, ‘Over’ is her best charting effort since 2017’s ‘Chained to the Rhythm’ peaked at #4 on the Hot 100.  As we extend our congrats to Katy, look inside to see who joined her in the top 25 on this week’s TGJ Chart Check:

Katy Perry never fell off. Her last album had a hit, spawned big budget videosC topped the albums charts. You need to look up what a true fall off/comeback is. She just has a lower selling album/era. It happens. But this wouldn’t be a comeback as she’s literally never left

Having a less successful era than your previous is one thing but be serious. having people look at you as a joke, scalp you at every juncture, and your singles flopping too is the definition of falling off. it only takes one bad era to derail someone whole career

katy perry had become a joke prior to idol. tour flopped, singles flopped, performances flopped. this new song is a comeback by all means

Ever since she went blonde she’s been treated like one. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it! GO BACK TO BLACK.

I really believe after 2009 radio swore off black females (except two or three) especially those that do urban music. No reason for Normani not to have gotten a fair shake with waves. Pop radio is putting it on urban to play and urban is only playing rap with like two or three r&b songs just for old times sake…There used to be a time when such an artist would’ve been embraced by both formats however, it’s sad to see that time gone.
