Chart Check [Hot 100]: Lizzo’s ‘Truth Hurts’ Is the First Top 5 Hit of Her Career

Published: Wednesday 7th Aug 2019 by Rashad

We can’t get enough of (relative) newcomer Lizzo and it appears the Billboard Hot 100 echoes our sentiment.

The rapping singer-songwriter – whose underground buzz helped catapult her to success in late 2018 – is reaping the reward of her hard work thanks to the ongoing success of her major label debut album, ‘Cuz I Love You,’ and its single, ‘Truth Hurts.’

The Ricky Reed-produced cut – originally released in 2017 – became the singer’s crowning glory due to its appearance on the Netflix series, ‘Someone Great.’ Just weeks after it was announced the song had become her first Hot 100 top 40 placement ever (click here to read more), it jumped into the top 5 for the first time last week (click here to see).

As if earning the honor of being her inaugural top 5 hit wasn’t enough, the tune’s rise to #4 this week – thanks to a handsome mix of streaming, digital downloads, and radio airplay – has made it a career peak for the burgeoning diva (to date).  Look inside to see who joins her in the top 25 this week on TGJ’s ‘Chart Check: Hot 100’:

    • King z August 7, 2019

Lol “make her a thing”? Wouldn’t her top 4 placement kinda indicate she is already a thing hun?

    • Jasmine August 7, 2019

Why are u here? It is obvious u work for TGJ. That is why u are on every post (even the ones no one reads) under one of your “Jasmine” troll accounts. I wonder why you picked me to impersonate. Imitation is a form of flattery BUT jealousy is a disease! Get well soon Jawanna Man. There is ONLY one Jasmine on this site who was born a female and she is me.

You have to work and use the computer and internet, and if you can do that and dedicate some time each day then you can do this with no problem.
I have been working with this for a month and have made over $2,000 already. let me know if you need more help.

This is very exciting. There hasn’t been a r&b girl in the top 5 of the chart apart from Rihanna in years.

    • King z August 7, 2019

No shade at all, But when was the last time rih was in the top 5 with an r&b hit?

All of her top 5 hits in the last 5-10 years could easily be classified in other genres. Work is islandy.

      • Jasmine August 7, 2019

        I agree King z

      • Meme August 7, 2019

Very true. I guess I wasn’t speaking specifically about r&b and more just black female artist in general.

      • SMH August 8, 2019

Carribean, or “islandy” music was born from R&B, therefore “Work” was Rihanna’s last top 5 R&B hit.

    • Jasmine August 7, 2019

This ain’t R&B though. The last real R&B hit to go top 5 was Ella Mai’s 2018 hit Bood Up.

      • Meme August 7, 2019

        Forgot about Boo’d up

    • Andrew August 8, 2019

    • SNF August 8, 2019

    She deserves EVERY BLESSING!

She is such a ray of positivity and LOVE! I battle with depression and she ALWAYS pulls me out of it.

  5. Tyty August 8, 2019

The Billboard charts are a mess since streaming some songs literally never leave the charts ???‍♀️

    • MessyBoots August 8, 2019

      Literally, a HOT 100 mess!

In fact, Truth Hurts is almost like a throwback to a bygone era when you would have multiple songs just like it, if not better, scattered around the chart. This generation’s version of popular music is dreadful. Hence, Old Told Road at No.1 for nearly 20 weeks.

      • Urg August 8, 2019

Seriously streaming really f*** up charting position and certified plaques.

    • SMH August 8, 2019

Agreed to all of this. Streaming destroyed the music industry, no matter what anyone says. And sadly I don’t see any way of bringing it back.

  6. LUCKI August 8, 2019

I cannot get into Lizzo or her music. I won’t say she’s untalented, because that’s not my belief but her music isn’t it for ME. She comes across as a caricature.

  7. ??? August 8, 2019

lmaooooo congrats i guess, still think shes too fat and everybody is being fake and dont wanna hurt her feelings lmfaooooooo

    • Blaine Kelley August 10, 2019

      “Too fat” to what exactly?

Cuz here her fat a$$ is having success on the back of her talent, bops, and image.

What more can an artist want?

Are you just disgruntled that a woman can be fat and be THAT B**CH?! LoL
