The song, which she debuted live at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards, comes on the heels of the end of her marriage to Liam Hemsworth.
For its visual, she’s seen trying to navigate her new circumstance after a love gone wrong.
Needless to say, she’s not shying away from her real-life narrative.

I think this is the new Miley. Just like Malibu. Yeah, it’s not urban or a hit. It’s moody music. I think the people who don’t like it either never really bought Miley music or like the Bangerz version of Miley when she was twerking. I have never bought any of her music but I can recognize when someone is growing…she went from Party in the USA to Bangerz to Malibu. She already got her money so the motivation to do another Bangerz is gone. She is doing music her suburban neighbors and friends likes.

Miley rocked this summer. Dare I say she’s made pop excellence per today’s standards with Mother’s Daughter and, now, with Slide Away. She’d captured my attention with The Climb, lost it after, and regained it with this EP. Melancholy suits her and she’s looking good. Deffo on the right path back to meaningful pop songs.
I love this song! It’s emotional and she sounds great. I personally thought she was one of the best vocally at the VMAs. She looks great too
The video is terrible and I don’t like the recorded version of the song, but the live VMA performance had me feeling for the first that I liked Miley. The song suits her voice perfectly, even though I prefer her singing it live and stronger than she does in the recording.

“Almost” isn’t the same. Her vocals were more dynamic live and without some of the processing used for effect in the recording. It was more stripped down. Develop your ear.
