Will Megan Thee Stallion‘s ‘Savage’ trot to the top two weeks after a stunning defeat in the race to the Hot 100 finish line?
Based on current projections, the answer is a strong…”maybe.”
See what we mean inside:
As we reported here last Monday (May 11), Stallion’s ‘Savage’ enjoyed a massive sales and streaming boost thanks to an assist from fellow Houstonian Beyoncé – a combo that helped run the remix all the way to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Albeit a contextual win as it marked the highest rung a Meg song’s reached to date, the runner-up placement was undoubtedly a disappointment for the rapper’s fans as they pointed to ‘sales padding’ by competitors Doja Cat and Nicki Minaj as the reason for the upset.
Cat and Minaj’s victory was short-lived, however, as it was undone this week by Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande‘s historic charity single, ‘Stuck With U’ (click here to read more on that) – a tune that used even more unconventional tactics to land the top spot.
With next week’s top songs’ respective sales counts to exclude any majorly padded figures (i.e. single bundling, etc.), industry analysts suggest ‘Savage’ could bound to #1 if it can outpace previous placeholder ‘Blinding Lights’ by The Weeknd.
Hours away from the final count (which ends tonight at 11:59p EST), Meg and Bey fans have begun corralling for increased sales and streaming of the J. White Did It-produced bop. The hiked activity could be just what’s needed to close the point-gap between them and Weeknd (which is currently outperforming ‘Savage,’ ‘Stuck With U,’ and ‘Say So’ on real-time iTunes charts as of time of this report).
While we await the official word from Billboard, if the prediction above rings true Grande and Bieber will pencil themselves in history books for one of the largest drops from #1 ever (following The Weeknd and The Scotts).
