Katy Perry‘s new album arrived in stores this week and based on first week sales forecasts, she’ll have some reason to ‘Smile’ and some reason to… not.

According to Hits Daily Double, the ‘Daises’ led LP is set to premiere on the Billboard 200 with the following numbers:
50,000-60,000
[Sales Plus Streaming]

40,000-45,000
[Pure Sales]
Should the sum hold, it’ll likely be enough to net Perry the week’s top new chart debut.
However, HDD make clear that ‘Smile’ is not in contention for the #1 spot based on how strongly existing releases are selling.

For the longest, yours truly has tried to remain somewhat optimistic about Ms. Perry’s present-day potential. Especially when she’s recently released criminally-underrated bops such as ‘Harleys In Hawaii‘ and ‘Never Really Over.’
But the numbers paint a concerning picture.
Remember friends, Perry has benefitted from a lengthy preorder window + multiple retail configurations – such as vinyls, cassettes, and an array of last minute new alternate covers.
And yet the end result is still only 50k?
She dropped her last album ‘Witness’ in 2017 and opened with 180,000, which was considered an underperformance then. She’s now selling one third of that now.

With all signs pointing to a possible Las Vegas residency, we suspect the present global health crisis adversely affected whatever Katy may have been cooking up to ensure album sales amidst a turning tide commercially (see: ticket bundling).
In any case, there’s a clear disconnect that the new mom will have to address sooner rather than later.

She took too long and too many flop singles. But the question is, had she released it sooner right after NRO, would it have been any different?
Yes, numbers would have been closer to Witness. Would not have matched, but she never should have waited so long, she’s not the type of artist that people wait years for. Her music is microwavable.
Katy should be proud of her success up until this point. Not many artists get to have such a meteoric rise in that industry and keep their brain intact. Great job Katy! I honestly never thought she’d be more than a one hit wonder after she fell during her first VMA performance. However, she did that. But the Witness era definitely was a misstep! You see who is still flourishing after “Swish Swish.”
I’ll be your A&R for your final comeback effort! Take it or leave it, but you only have three options to stay afloat:
1) Drop the moniker and continue as a blonde indie singer. The music can be like it used to be, true to you. You didn’t pop off until “I Kissed A Girl” anyway.
2) Greatest Hits collection and add a new song or two. I’d consider re-recording the songs if you don’t want direct ties to Tyson Traxx. But he was the main reason she was hot for as long as she was!
3) Die the hair BLACK, get your body SNATCHED, and jump back in the game! Work your way back to Tyson, stop giving so much of a f***, and get those hits. Show some ass and tiddies. Don’t hold back, it will be your final chance at major relevancy!
And that’s about it. Not sure how else she can come back from this. Those sales are just plain bad when you think about how she basically was the number one star in the world for a while. Might be time to hang it up!

The album is a mix of two halves. Smile, Only Love, Cry about it later, Never really over, Daisies and Champagne Problems are great. The rest of the album was trash. Harleys in Hawaii and Small Talk were huge misteps. The original cover art was a none starter. But also people have been unfairly harsh to her for the Taylor thing. She’s trying to be a positive artist after Witness but clearly lost a lot of fans. Pop fans are amongst the most fickle. Genuine shock though, expected this to shift around 100k…
What her team did wrong was release the album’s best song, “Never Really Over,” in May 2019. That song should have been released in May 2020 followed by, “Daisies.” The numbers wouldn’t be incredible but they would be a hell of a lot better than this. I haven’t connected with the album yet. Her best album, in my opinion, is “Prism.” This record so far just sounds so so. On some songs like “Not the End of the World,” you want her to rock out and belt another chorus with a key change at the end. It doesn’t happen—leaving your wanting more, but not in a good way. It’s hard to explain, “Prism,” felt kind of magical for me. This album just sounds tired.
Wow this is not good. She should have released the album when NRO was popular. I thought the predictions would have been higher based on all the last minute moves. She still has 9 number 1’s three of which are diamond singles so nothing left to prove. Wow these sales are worst than Witness. The album gets a B. It just wasn’t the right time to release the album.

But really based off the singles’ performance what did we expect? NRO released well over a year ago, small talk in the 80s, Harleys nowhere, Never worn white Nowhere, Daisies number 40 but off the chart in 7 weeks and Smile Nowhere. So sad to see to be honest.
The album is also half crap. The singles were good and tucked, teary eyed are okay/good but everything else is mindless generic crap.
Dr. Luke really was the key to her success, i miss their work together! Max martin was too but his work with her on witness proves she still had too much say in her song crafting (which isnt a good thing in katy’s case). I know charts arent everything but we cant even say the music is great to compensate.
