Pop Radio Chart: Dua Lipa’s ‘Levitating’ Hits #1 For First Time 35 Weeks After Debut

Published: Tuesday 15th Jun 2021 by Rashad

New rules, indeed!

In a world where music consumption is dominated by digital downloads and streaming, many once thought traditional radio was a dying format – until Dua Lipa‘s 2020 hit ‘Levitating,’ that is.

Thanks to an unprecedented resurgence on the platform, the Koz-produced cut – once written off after its initial failure at launch – has literally rewritten the rules on how long a song’s lifeline can be extended due to radio success.

Now, for the first time in its enduring tenure, ‘Levitating’ has been lifted to the apex of the format’s tally.

After a four month run from October 2020 to February 2021, ‘Levitating’ fell off the Pop Airplay chart before bouncing back in May 2021.  It’s been a top 5 mainstay since.

Per Billboard:

“Dua Lipa’s “Levitating,” featuring DaBaby, ascends to the top of two Billboard radio airplay charts, Pop Airplay and Adult Pop Airplay (dated June 19). Lipa lands her fourth No. 1 on Pop Airplay and second on Adult Pop Airplay.

Lipa first ruled Pop Airplay with “New Rules” for four weeks in February 2018, followed by “Don’t Start Now” (six weeks, February-April 2020) and “Break My Heart” (one week, August 2020).”

*****

With ‘Levitating’ ascended to the Pop radio throne, the tune’s parent album – ‘Future Nostalgia’ – becomes the first album in the history of Warner Records to spawn three #1 hits on this particular chart.  Among all label efforts, it’s the first LP to spawn three #1 hits on this chart since Selena Gomez‘s ‘Revival’ rotated ‘Good For You,’ ‘Same Old Love,’ and ‘Hands to Myself’ to its summit across 2015-16.

Look below to see who joins Lipa in the top 10 of this week’s Pop Airplay charts.

Lol the Billboard Charts are weird. She’s Top the Radio, Digital Sales, Streaming charts etc. Her metrics increased across the board but have not Top the Hot 100 as of yet. Olivia’s Good 4 U and BTS Butter are blocking her. Radio plays a huge part of the points weekly it’s weird she’s hasn’t hit number 1 on the Hot 100. Does Billboard manipulate the charts? These calculations are just plain weird.

There is nothing weird about it. Reading is fundamental. This is RADIO playing the song. In the US RADIO plays used to be the only way to get a hit alongside physical purchases (because people went and bought what they heard on the RADIO).

The Billboard Hot 100 = Spotify, YouTube, Tiktok, DOWNLOADS (sales) FROM CONSUMERS AND RADIO Airplay in a formula:

      PER BILLBOARD

“ The Hot 100 breaks down in line with the formula’s: sales, 39%; airplay, 34%; and, streaming, 27%.

And, week-to-week, some songs show largely along those percentages, while others skew noticeably toward any of the chart’s three metrics.”

Duh!! I’m very much aware of this. I don’t need a reminder or an essay explaining the charts. I read the article well and clear. I’m literally a subscriber of the Billboard charts so I know all this and I know how it’s calculated. This is my opinion and I know it depends on the week. Billboard recently made changes and Radio plays a huge part in metrics. There are songs up to this day that go hard one week with high sales streams etc then the following week they fall off, there is no longevity at all. This was also mainly in the past with bundles. Good 4 U hit number 1 with only an average of about 3.8 million radio impressions less than 4 million. Her sales wasn’t even that great but her streaming was high. It all depends on the week. Levitating has longevity and staying power. This is great for a song released almost a year ago.

Levitating the original version is better than the dababy remix.
