Much like the 2021 Billboard Music Awards before it, this year’s iteration of the show may have packed star power aplenty with dynamic performances from the likes of Megan Thee Stallion, Latto, Maxwell, Jack Harlow, Burna Boy, and more (as we reported here), but the assembly of hitmakers still wasn’t enough to win the night’s ratings war.
Also like last year’s edition, the 2022 #BBMAs made history for the ceremony as its lowest-rated to date.
Viewership: 2.11 million
After welcoming 2.8 million viewers to the 2021 #BBMAs, the telecast broke its own low-ratings record by only nabbing 2.11 million sets of eyes for Sunday’s showing (May 15).
“…the 2022 Billboard Music Awards delivered an average 0.5 rating in the 18-49 demo and 2.11 million viewers across its three-hour broadcast on NBC, slipping even lower from the previous year’s fast affiliates (0.7, 2.8M).”
The show may not have been a ratings winner itself, but it did make BIG winners out of some of its superstar audience members. In addition to Olivia Rodrigo being the night’s biggest story (taking home seven wins), Kanye West came in second place with a whopping six awards (as we reported here)!

Most of the performers you already know exactly what they’re going to do, like Megan and Silk Sonic, and these shows have lost almost all integrity in terms of who gets the award. No surprises.
Award shows know they need Beyoncé, Britney, or Rihanna for ratings. What did they expect with this lineup. 🤣 Even Normani didn’t show up to this slumfest

Because no one is bringing anything NEW, Silk Sonic is simply RECYCLING 70’s R&B/Fashions. Same w/ Jack Harlow…nothing NEW. And the Females are still twerking after how many years now?? Maxwell hasn’t had a Top 10 hit since the late 90’s…WTF?? He’s not well known outside the R&B Community either.
Music isn’t solely about Billboard hits, it’s the artists themselves who generate Interests, first and foremost. When ppl say “everyone sound the same”, that mean the consumers want to see individuality.
Currently the music Industry is struggling when it comes to showcasing individuality & INNOVATIONS hence the LOW ratings & mediocre sales.
