Lizzo Says Ariana Grande, Doja Cat, & SZA Should Join Her on Fantasy Remake of ‘Lady Marmalade’

Published: Thursday 21st Jul 2022 by Rashad

The promo trail is seeing quite its fair share of Lizzo as the ‘About Damn Time’ hitmaker is blazing a path in support of her sophomore major label release ‘Special.’

Already forecasted to land in the top 10 of next week’s Billboard 200 (as we reported here), Liz is putting in work to push the set to even higher heights on the tally.

In addition to rocking live TV performances, radio interviews, and more, the GRAMMY winner’s also gracing the pages of a number of print outlets – most recently making headlines for a stunning spread in ‘ELLE UK.’

When not shining in the mag’s feature article with talk about body positivity and her impact on the music industry, the singer-songwriter was filmed behind the scenes talking about breaking beauty records and more on the ‘ELLE UK’ video segment ‘Ask Me Anything.’

Look inside to see her surprising response to being quizzed about a fantasy remake of the iconic 2001 rendition of the timeless classic ‘Lady Marmalade.’

Over 20 years after topping the charts thanks to an ‘Avengers’-style lineup of divas Christina Aguilera, P!nk, Lil Kim, and Mya, hit song ‘Lady Marmalade’ – first brought to fame in 1974 by the Patti LaBelle-led group LaBelle – is hailed as a standard among female collaborations.

Recently, Lizzo was asked who among today’s crop of stars was worthy of uniting for an updated take on the classic.

“If I were to recreate ‘Marmalade’ with the girls that are out now, I would say me as Missy, SZA as Mya, Doja Cat as Lil Kim, and Ariana Grande as Christina Aguilera’s part,” she told ‘ELLE UK’ after revealing she’d previously thought about the fantasy scenario. “It would be fierce,” she added despite accidentally omitting a P!nk replacement.

Liz’s quote isn’t the first time Ariana (who she previously collaborated with on the 2019 ‘Good as Hell’ remix) was named as a “must have” for any prospective ‘Marmalade’ reboot.  ‘Wild Side’ singer Normani once co-signed a fan’s suggestion that she join forces with Grande, Megan Thee Stallion, and Dua Lipa for a remake of the iconic song (as we reported here).

While we wait to see if Ari takes anyone up on the offer, click “PLAY” on the video above to watch Lizzo’s hilarious takes on a number of other scenarios in ‘Ask Me Anything.’

Lizzo you’re not that girl. Yes to everyone but Lizzo.

The 4th gurl would be Megan the Stallion

Christina Aguilera – Jessie J – Similarly showy vocals. Arianas voice is too light.
Pink – Demi Lovato – Similar rock tinged voice
Mya – Normani – Similar dancer with a lil voice type thing going on
Lil Kim – Cardi B – i just think with her energy and popularity she’d help make it a smash

        Normani? 😂

      • Normila July 21, 2022

@Scoopz agree with your picks. . . except on Ariana having a lighter voice than Jessie J—the latter is (an untrained) coloratura, i.e. the lightest voice type there is.

Surprisingly, I see Tamar fill Xtina’s mighty shoes. Case in point is her live rendition of Lady Marmelade’s explosive climax here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LKgpdMqMZVs

It would be Miley, not Demi. No one is checking for her.

Nooooo please don’t let lizzo do this. It should be Normani, Taylor Swift, Cardi B, and Ariana Grande.

Normani? Please, you can’t be serious. What did she do to deserve such an honnor? Nothing, she didn’t even release a first album in 6 years, that’s ridiculous.

      • Blow July 21, 2022

Taylor Swift is the one you should be questioning lmao

    • Normila July 21, 2022

Taylor just for white popularity, right? Coz beautiful gowns don’t a successful cover make.

  3. Rest In Pisss Marilyn + Shayla 💀🥀 July 21, 2022

That woman doesn’t know what to invent to catch people’s attention. The gossip around the lyrics of Grrr was intentional, the comparaison with Taylor Swift too, and now this? I DON’T THINK SO LIZZO, you’re not that girl.

It’s clear y’all didn’t read. Lizzo said she wanted to be MISSY – whose vocal contribution to the song was minimal

Lizzo is right for casting herself in that part

    • Detruth July 21, 2022

      She’s no Missy either!

      • Normila July 21, 2022

She is Missy’s size circa ’01.

Um, Jazmine Sullivan and Ari Lennox can ACTUALLY sing.
