The chatter around ‘Church Girl’ has been anything but holy, placing the popular Beyonce ‘Renaissance’ song at the center of ongoing controversy.
Since the song’s July 29 unveiling, some critics have slammed its use of the 1981 Clark Sister classic ‘Center of Thy Will’ as the center of its sample – a feat of particular note as the subject matter of ‘Will’ is certainly not that of ‘Church.’
Because the writer of ‘Center,’ lead Clark Sister Twinkie Clark, gave use of the sample two thumbs up, she and Bey were the center of a headline-grabbing denunciation by President and CEO of the Upper Room COGIC Patrick Wooden (as we reported here).
As polarizing conversation around the topic continues, GRAMMY-nominated Gospel superstar Deitrick Haddon took to social media to defend the Pop diva.

I am very conflicted over this “ Church Girl” song and I choose to stand up for the Pastor(s) on this one rather than Beyoncé. Most, maybe not all are not picking on her. They are letting her know this is not ok. Yes sinners do what sinners do AND I get it, Beyoncé is a secular artist so I do not expect her to act like a gospel artist. I’m almost certain that neither did the Pastor(s) who took a stand on the song “Church Girl”. But, just like Cigarettes are hazardous to everyone’s health, it’s different when advertisers start subtly directing their messaging toward children. That’s when Folks start speaking up and taking a stand. “ Church Girl” is hopefully speaking about and to Church WOMEN and not programming young girls, but the song IS entitled “ Church GIRL”.
