The Supremes, Slick Rick, & Nile Rodgers Lead List of 2023 GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Honorees

Published: Friday 6th Jan 2023 by Rashad

The Supremes, Slick Rick, and Nile Rodgers may all be hailed as pioneers for the grounds they’ve broken in music genres of R&B/Pop, Hip-Hop/Rap, and Funk/Disco respectively, but despite that reverence none of them were ever recognized for their own albums or singles by the Recording Academy.

That is set to change February 5 as all three legendary acts will join the hallowed halls of the GRAMMYs’ Lifetime Achievement recipients.

Details inside.

On Thursday (January 5), the Recording Academy took to press to release its official roster of Special Merit Awards honorees who will be recognized during a separate Grammy ceremony at Los Angeles’ Wilshire Ebell Theatre on February 4.

“The Academy is proud to celebrate this diverse slate of influential music people spanning numerous genres and crafts as our 2023 Special Merit Awards honorees,” said Harvey Mason Jr., Recording Academy CEO. “Each creator on this list has made an impact on our industry — from technical to creative achievements — representing the breadth of music’s diverse community,” he continued. “We’re excited to celebrate this group of legends next month that continues to inspire and shape the music world.”

The Supremes, Nile Rodgers, Rock sister duo Heart, Slick Rick, Bobby McFerrin, Nirvana, Blues pioneer Gertrude “Ma” Rainey, and other iconic names line the list of Lifetime Achievement recipients.  Click here to see the full list.

It’s of special note that Diana Ross, a 13-time GRAMMY-nominee and only surviving member of the original Supremes lineup, received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy for her solo work in 2012.

This year, she stands a chance to win her first competitive golden gramophone as her 2021 studio album, ‘Thank You,’ is nominated in the Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album category.

My GREATEST WISH is that Diana Ross wins her first competitive Grammy for Best Traditional Pop Album (“Thank You”). I am also happy to know that The Supremes is on the list of Lifetime Achievement recipients. In 2023 I am happy to see all my favorite artists getting recognized for their body of work, current, and past. I have to add Matell to this list of 2023 artists on my list for two singles out now, “Honest Man (DJ Tremelo Remix) & “Something TO Fk With (DJ Tremelo Remix)”; both songs were written exclusively about the late Pop Star Aaron Carter before his untimely passing.

I certainly hope Diana wins her first competitive Grammy this year. I know the competition was super steep back in her prime days but still, it would be so nice to see her win considering her body of work.
