Billboard: The Weeknd’s ‘Popular’ Delivered Madonna’s First Appearance on R&B Charts in Nearly 30 Years

Published: Saturday 17th Jun 2023 by Rashad

Madonna may have made overall Billboard history this week when her latest single, ‘Popular‘ (led by The Weeknd and featuring Playboi Carti), charged onto the Hot 100 and made her the first female act to have charted a new single in each of the last five decades, but the tune’s appearance on the hitlist also marked a unique personal milestone.

Details inside.

‘Popular’ arrived at #43 on the refreshed Hot 100, entering as the week’s second-highest premiere for a new female-led song (following the #13 landing of Latto and Cardi B‘s ‘Put It On Da Floor‘).

The positioning comes as the highest the Pop titan has reached since her solo ‘Rebel Heart‘ hit ‘B*tch I’m Madonna‘ nested at #84 on the tally in 2015.

Faring even better on this week’s Billboard’s ‘Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs’ chart, however, ‘Popular’ premiered #14 – marking Madonna’s second highest-charting hit on the rhythmic tally since peaking at #9 with her classic ‘Like a Virgin’ in 1985.  In fact, ‘Popular’ comes as the 64-year-old’s first appearance on the R&B ranking since her 1995 hit, ‘Human Nature,’ peaked at #57.

Her 16th appearance on ‘Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs’ chart overall (spanning back to 1983’s ‘Holiday‘), the Queen of Pop proves yet again that her musical reign is not limited to just one genre.

Did she not get credit on the chart with Beyoncé’s remix of Break My Soul? Or was that not included as an R&B song? 🤔

No! The credit would go to Beyonce. The Madonna sample was used to create a new song. Madonna was compensated and relinquished the rights to the new song.

        Licensed, not relinquished.

she and beYAWNce look just alike and they both are quick to recruit these younger and newer artist to jump on a track to give them chart cred. beYAWNce’s been doing it for years, Shakira, Lady GaGa, Justin Timberlake, Nicki Minaj, Meghan Thee Stallion…and this is how she got all those Grammy’s as well. They know that if a newer artist is very popular, chances are if they duet with them or featured on their album or vice versa, they’ll chart and depending on how good the new artist is, the could get a number one song and a grammy nomination or win. FARTonce is a legend at this and what’s sad about it, she and grandMAdonna are too old to be singing with and about what these young artist are singing about…but that’s how they stay relevant. Both of them are narcissistic and attention seeking.
