Chart Check: Miguel Makes History As 2010’s ‘Sure Thing’ Becomes His Highest-Charting Hit Ever

Published: Saturday 3rd Jun 2023 by Rashad

While many artists can boast seeing their hits of yesteryear be beneficiaries of the impact of Tik Tok, few can do so to the level of Miguel with his smash ‘Sure Thing.’

Seeing a resurgence that’s penciled him in Billboard history books, the tune went from obscurity after peaking at #36 in 2011 to becoming the biggest hit of his career to date thanks to its viral status on the video-based social media platform.

With a 43-week Hot 100 reign (and counting) under its belt, the Happy Perez-produced tune not only notched a personal milestone for the GRAMMY winner by being listed as his longest-charting song yet, it’s also made history for its lengthy reign on another Billboard chart.

Details inside.

Found at #13 on this week’s edition of the Hot 100, ‘Sure’ sits as the highest rung Miggy’s reached to date – besting his previous career high by two positions (the Mariah Carey-led hit, ‘Beautiful,’ peaked at #15 in 2013).

The win isn’t the only one the 37-year-old is celebrating this week, however.

Peruse of Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs sees ‘Sure’ printed at #6 in its 80th week of appearing on the chart – becoming the first song in the hitlist’s 65-year history to know as long of a reign. Before it, Queen of Hip-Hop Soul Mary J. Blige‘s iconic 2005 hit ‘Be Without You’ was the longest-running tune in the tally’s history (75 weeks).

The song was was huge on Urban radio back in 2011. So I’m not surprised about the 80+ weeks. But I don’t understand why he didn’t catch on with POP since he’s very EMO/alternative R&B like the Weeknd/SZA.
