Bree Runway Announces Major Label Exit: “I Am Now Independent”

Published: Monday 3rd Jul 2023 by Sam

Bree Runway is embarking on a new chapter as an independent artist.

The eclectic songstress has been making waves on a global scale with bops such as ‘Hot Hot,’ATM,’ and ‘Somebody Like You.’ She’s also collaborated with the likes of Lady Gaga, Missy Elliott, as well as Khalid and recently wrapped a stint touring with Lizzo.

However, for all the buzz, many have been awaiting that all-important breakout moment for the London-based star. And Bree herself has been vocal about the hurdles in recent interviews.

Now, she’s gone public with the announcement that she’s departed Universal’s EMI Records.

Full story below…

In an open letter to fans shared on social media, the performer wrote:

“yes there have been cuts along the way but in no way am I here to bleed out to you all, but I do think it’s important I share with you why I’ve been so uncharacteristically silent recently. I’ve decided to part ways with my label EMI records, Universal. I’m now independent. I feel it’s the absolute best thing for my career right now. The system truly does have a way of wearing on you, especially as a young black woman you really are up against it, naturally or perhaps, unnaturally resources are capped for us or we have to fight a million times harder for them aswell as having to fight 10x harder for our spots, it’s like all I’ve known is fight, fight, fight. I’m tired and for once I’m honouring that. Right now I’m spending time being delicate and loving to myself, I’m choosing to give myself rest and i’m really enjoying the space I’m in.”

She continued:

“I also don’t want to create music with the rat race mentality that artists in the system subconsciously develop, and I no longer want any desperate agendas attached to my music, I want to reel it in and take it all back to love of music. You can’t go wrong when your art is birthed this way, it’s only greatness that will follow especially when you’ve always been destined for it. I deserve the best of me and so do you guys, give me a lil second to put some life and colour back into my process of creating. love you all, please just be patient with me.

BR”

Bree is a force – one capable and deserving of so much more. Here’s hoping new pastures bring the success and recognition she is due.

    Don’t blame her.

Despite the TLC, New Edition and countless other music industry biopics people STILL want to be signed by a major label.

It’s called a 360 deal! They own your masters! Your publishing! They get in-house producers and engineers to mix your music. They get a cut of ALL your endorsements. THEY. OWN. YOU!

You can get a following without a label.

Chance the Rapper proved this. You can literally put your song on Spotify and get streams. It’s just getting ears on your music that’s the tough part.

The problem is people want the fame. Do you want to live off of music? Have a stream of income besides it. Write for other artists. Learn to be a producer, engineer, wear many hats.

    Geesh

Happy for her. Hoping Doechii follows suit too!

The way I’m a nobody and have TGJ staff PRESSED, but y’all won’t censor the racist, predator and misogynistic comments.

Saying I hope more artists go independent is bad?

I’m glad she’s independent since she was funding most of her videos. And she consistently drop bops after bops with dope visuals. She deserves so much more and I wish her the best.

Those women get ALL their coins, have creative control. None of them take orders from perverted men who have them bending over in every video.

No one said it’s easy, but it’s worth it and sacrifices must be made. Especially for women in a Industry controlled by men.

Hopefully more women go Independent, Let the men exploit each other for FAME.

It’s man, man’s world! Do you have any ideas how many time Britney Spears had to bang MAX martin to get her some hits???? It is what it is. This music industry is nasty and women had to f*** her way to the top, Look at Beyonce, Mariah & Jlo… these ladies either married or hooked up with CEOs or producers.

      • True Tea July 4, 2023

        I agree.

The industry is very nasty and women who chose the FAME do not leave without scars. That’s all I’m going to say.
