Doja Cat, the Most GRAMMY-Nominated Female Rapper of the Century, Ties Lauryn Hill on All-Time List Thanks to New Nods

Published: Saturday 11th Nov 2023 by Rashad

Some Doja Cat fans (affectionately called #Kittens) may argue the rapper’s ‘Attention‘-led fourth album ‘Scarlet‘ didn’t get the attention it deserved from the Recording Academy when the 66th annual GRAMMY nominations were announced Friday (November 10), but the trio of nods the 28-year-old did receive were still enough to put her in historic company.

Details inside.

Cat’s chart-topping ‘Paint the Town Red‘ may rank as one of the year’s biggest hits, but it definitely wasn’t atop the list of GRAMMY voters for the ceremony’s 2024 show as the Dionne Warwick-sampling cut – previously believed to be a shoo-in for Record or Song of the Year listing – was completely omitted from the “Big 4” categories all together (Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, or Best New Artist).

The tune’s absence marks the first time since 2020 the Rap diva was shut out of competing for the event’s major awards.

Solace came via the fact the three nominations she did score – Best Melodic Rap Performance (‘Attention’), Best Rap Song (‘Attention’), and Best Pop Solo Performance (‘Paint’) – upped her career GRAMMY nominations count to 19.

The feat not only extended her reign as the century’s most GRAMMY-nominated female rapper but also tied her with the cumulative nomination stats with that of legendary rapper-songstress Lauryn Hill. As of time reported, however, Hill remains the most GRAMMY-awarded femcee thanks to eight credited wins over her lifetime.

Among all femcees, Missy Elliott – with 22 nods – remains the overall champ on the nominations front.

The 2024 GRAMMYs air live on CBS on February 4, 2024.

The people behind the Grammys have always been out of touch when it comes to hiphop and r&b.. But I do think Doja is a good artist. So, I can’t say she doesn’t deserve these nominations. Especially among the current cast of femcess.

I guess when Doja drops another album or two, she’ll have the most grammy noms for a rapper. I really want Missy Elliott to release more music. She looks amazing, like she’s aged backwards.
