Hot 100: SZA Breaks Longstanding Michael & Janet Jackson Top 10 Records with ‘Snooze’ & Other Hits from ‘SOS’

Published: Sunday 21st Jan 2024 by Rashad

The Hot 100 has done all but sleep on ‘Snooze,’ the history-making sixth single from SZA‘s chart-busting sophomore album ‘SOS.’

As if marking a personal milestone for being her longest-charting song to date (racking up a whopping 56-week and counting) wasn’t enough, the Babyface-produced bop was penciled in record books when it went on to be the only song to be printed on the hitlist every week last year.

Having already tied or broken Billboard records by music monarchs Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Mary J. Blige, Aretha Franklin, Rihanna, and others, SZA woke up in 2024 to news ‘Snooze’ had helped her break a three-way tie with Pop royals Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson thanks to its rebound into the Hot 100’s top 10.

While superstar siblings Michael and Janet Jackson sit in Hot 100 history books for being the first male and female acts to launch 5 or more top 10 hits from one album with ‘Thriller‘ (7) and ‘Control‘ (5) respectively, they are uniquely the first male and female acts to launch multiple top 10s from one LP over 3 calendar years.

MJ was the first ever to accomplish the feat when hits from ‘Thriller’ moonwalked into the Hot 100’s top 10 in 1982, 1983, and 1984 while Janet’s ‘Rhythm Nation 1814‘ etched her in record logs when a whopping 7 of its hits landed in the same chart territory across 1989, 1990, and 1991.

Note: Jan holds the record as the only female performer to have different #1s from the same album over three calendar years.

It would be over 15 years before another act – Fergie – joined this unique fold thanks to smashes from her debut solo album, ‘The Dutchess,’ reigning in the top 10 in 2006, 2007, and 2008.

The Weeknd followed over a decade later when songs from his fourth studio album, ‘After Hours,’ clocked chart-toppers in 2019, 2020, and 2021 respectively (making him the only male in history to have achieved this feat).

Last week and this week’s refreshed Hot 100 (the first of the year printed without Christmas songs), showed ‘Snooze’ back at #6 – making her the first act in music history to chart top 10 hits from one album over 4 years.
