“I Really Messed Up This Time”: Lil Nas X Says ‘J Christ’ Was Misunderstood & the Backlash Has Led to Depression

Published: Wednesday 31st Jan 2024 by Rashad

As the backlash for his latest single, ‘J Christ,’ rages on, rapper-singer Lil Nas X took to the ‘On Purpose‘ podcast recently to dish on the fallout and the impact it’s made on him personally and professionally.

Like we previously reported, the Omer Fedi-produced cut – believed to be the first from LNX’s forthcoming sophomore studio album – rubbed Christians the wrong way with its religious imagery including scenes of the GRAMMY winner playing basketball with Satan and being crucified like Jesus.

The blowback from the visual and its promotion prompted the hitmaker (born Montero Hill) to issue an apology, which later proved to be too little too late as ‘J Christ’ opened on the Billboard Hot 100 with some of his lowest first-week figures to date.

Hill maintains the backlash was unwarranted, however, as the meaning behind the clip was taken out of context.

“[‘J Christ’] was this thing that artistically was just supposed to be like, I’m returning … I’m back like Him,” he told host Jay Shetty. “It turned into this whole thing where it was me trying to dunk on Christians or something, and that was never what it was. Never.”

And while the 24-year-old doubled down on his stance that he is not remorseful for making the video, he does understand how it could be perceived as insensitive.

“This [was a] thing that I thought was just like a little jokey fun video. I also had to think about how many of my family members are Christian, like my grandmothers and stuff, and like aunties and things like that,” he said after stating the tune’s promotional clips look “bad on paper.” “I’m like, ‘Wow, do they see this as that too?’ If they do, you know, that’s really messed up. And it makes me sad.”

Elsewhere in the conversation, Montero revealed his “place in his career” – especially as it relates to the response to ‘J Christ’ – scares him.

“I’ve never been here – mentally and physically – you’ve been so focused and zoned in on what you’re doing, and you push your art out into the world and it’s kind of received negatively by the majority … but then also understanding why, you know, and having to see it through,” he relayed. “So I guess that’s where I’m at right now and my next move, you know, the things that I’m planning on right now, I feel like somewhere in here that’s gonna be this magical moment that I can’t even take credit for.”

No surprise there. No one listens to Sam Smith / Gaynas anymore. He does tooooo damn much and it comes across as corny and try hard. The non binary s*** is annoying too!!

  11. Ha! January 31, 2024

He got a new career yall, cheesy drag shows at the Village or working for GLAAD

    • GrowUpDollz January 31, 2024

There’s nothing wrong with that. An authentic career supporting GLAAD and being true to yourself >>>>>>>>>> everything

  12. YAHSHUA IS COMING January 31, 2024

You mess with the messiah so blatantly, YAH will make you pay. Do NOT mock christ, ever. Apologize and repent. That being said, Lil Nas appears to start to get some sense about himself. We will see

I like him but the problem now adays with people is not thinking or caring before they speak or doing things like this! What you say and what you do is very important especially when your a celebrity!!! They are cancelling the hell out of celebrities now adays because of stupid stuff like this! You gotta use your brain and think whoa this might jeopardize my career!

  14. GrowUpDollz January 31, 2024

He tried it when he lied about the school thing, that’s when I was like I can’t stand by this, u on ur own with this one. The controversial music and imagery isn’t that serious, it’s the backtracking, the lack of authenticity and lies. People don’t like that. Either way, he has a lot of material and a whole career ahead of him. It’s America, he’s an extremely tall dark skin attractive q**** man. If it were anyone else, he would be ok. They always come for our people. Look, Lil Nas Just get ur s*** together. U and Nicki both flopping a-listers. Let’s play save-a-career cuz a new gay will take this spot any moment now….

    • TGJuicée February 2, 2024

      He’s attractive? 😳😶

And also girls, stop using mental health as a weapon. The comments be as delusional as these f****** idiotic celebrities. Our country is facing a crisis. So if folks are really sick, just wish them well and move on. No need to throw mental and behavioral health jabs, it’s insult to injury. The girls be needing actual help; and those in the comments too. If anyone needs assistance please call the suicidal hotline or 988 God bless #CleanUpTheComments #ReadForFilthWithDecorum

I don’t feel sorry for him. His attempt at shock value failed and now he regrets it. Gimmicks can only last but so long. At this point in his career he should be focusing on his artistry….

  17. EffU January 31, 2024

Girl don’t backpedal now because you flopped. You played with God and you got brought down to reality. Welcome home bish!!!

  18. eric January 31, 2024

No one made a mistake. He is very explicit with everything he does because he wants people to see it for exactly what it is.

  19. MecostaDenada January 31, 2024

Chile, please. I feel nothing. If you feel sad then you deserve it. That was beyond blasphemous, and disrespectful.

  20. Over it February 1, 2024

Brought it on yourself homie. Stop playing with Jesus name just to get attention.

Let your talent speak not shock value.
