Chart Check: Lil Nas X Announces Next Single After ‘J Christ’ Marks One of His Lowest Hot 100 Debuts to Date

Published: Tuesday 23rd Jan 2024 by Rashad

Having watched the hoopla around the respective music videos for Montero‘ era singles ‘Call Me By Your Name,’ ‘Industry Baby,’ and ‘That’s What I Want’ help hoist them to top 10 debuts on the Billboard Hot 100, Lil Nas X is no stranger to utilizing the power of visuals to help yield a hit.

That controversial formula didn’t exactly wield the desired results when employed for his most recent release J Christ – a jaw-dropping visual filled with sacrilegious imagery including depictions of LNX being crucified like Jesus and playing basketball with Satan.

Quickly going back to the drawing board, the GRAMMY winner is already moving on to the polarizing tune’s follow-up.

Taking to social media on Monday (January 22), the rapper-singer (born Montero Hill) confirmed the ‘J Christ’ successor is slated for release next week.

“We made it to Billboard,” Hill started his post in reference to the lukewarm reception of ‘J Christ.’ “I don’t want y’all to think I take this for granted! I appreciate you and adore you. New song next week!”

At writing, he has not confirmed which day next week the unknown tune will be released.

The announcement came the same day Billboard unveiled its refreshed Hot 100 which saw ‘J Christ’ – the lead single to his yet-titled sophomore album – printed at #69 following an aggressive week of promotion by the controversial star.

Here are the numbers that supported its modest arrival.

  • Streaming ≈ 6.9 million U.S.-based streams
  • Sales ≈ 1,500 digital downloads
  • Radio airplay ≈ 7.3 million audience impressions

Albeit higher than industry analyst predictions, the #69 opening marks one of the lowest first-week Hot 100 appearances of Hill’s career yet (among official singles); only his megahit ‘Old Town Road’ (#83) and ‘Montero’ tune ‘Lost in the Citadel’ (#90) premiered lower.

I hope his time his up, he and his antics are really getting annoying. That could be forgiven, if the music was good, but it is not.

I ain’t religious but one thing I don’t play around is God and Jesus…all who have spoken against him, and mocked him have all felt the wrath..this guy is next and when it happens it’s going to painfully excruciating..we will all be there when he falls..we will wake up one day and see this mans face attached to some kind of headline news and it wont be good..it’s coming..

Controversy is no longer a viable promotional strategy in the age of social media because EVERYTHING is controversial now–which means nothing is. You don’t necessarily have to have talent to make it these days, but offending the wrong people is a quick way to end a career. Look how they tried to destroy Janet.

For me, it was just that Lil Nas X had already done this. His new era seems like a rehash, like he’s run out of ideas. And femininity in men is no longer the taboo it used to be so there’s not even any shock value in that.

What I would have liked to see if him come with some new sounds, not with what’s currently trendy. Push the boundaries of the actual music. Trolling is a career choice with an expiration date.
