With over 100 million records sold globally, Mary J. Blige stands as one of the most successful female acts in R&B history.
Yet, despite launching unforgettable songs like ‘Real Love,’ ‘Not Gon Cry,’ ‘My Life,’ ‘Family Affair,’ ‘Be Without You,’ and many more over her 32-year career, fans would be surprised to learn most of her sales accolades have been awarded to those tunes’ parent albums and not the singles themselves.
The latest evidence of that came Thursday (January 4) when the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) lifted a toast to her 2022 hit ‘Good Morning Gorgeous‘ – the title track from her 14th studio album of the same name.
Taking to press earlier this week, the RIAA revealed ‘Gorgeous’ had been bestowed a shiny Gold plaque for sales equivalence of 500,000 in the United States.
The award comes as the first of its ilk Blige has received since her 2005 megahit, ‘Be Without You,’ soared to a like certification in June 2006. In fact, the two Mary favorites join ‘You Remind Me,’ ‘Real Love,’ ‘Not Gon Cry,’ and ‘Not Today’ as the only singles from the R&B diva’s catalog to be certified Gold or higher.
At the height of its popularity, ‘Gorgeous’ became the Hip Hop Soul Queen’s seventh chart-topper on the Adult R&B Airplay chart where it reigned for 4 weeks.
It went on to nab three prestigious GRAMMY nods at the award show’s 2023 ceremony – Record of the Year, Best R&B Song, and Best Traditional R&B Performance.
