Billboard 200: Madonna Makes History with #1 Debut of 'Confessions II'

In what comes as little surprise, Queen of Pop Madonna has reassumed the Billboard 200 throne thanks to her latest studio effort ‘Confessions II.’

Her newest reign, however, is accompanied by some history-making news.

See how inside.

Madonna’s ‘Confessions II’

First-Week Sales (SPS): 134,000 units

First-Week Sales (Pure): 114,000 units

Billboard 200 Debut:  #1

Released July 3, the new album  – which shines as the conceptual sequel to 2005’s ‘Hung Up‘-holding ‘Confessions on a Dancefloor‘ – danced to the top of the updated Billboard 200 on the wings of initial sales of 134,000 units.

It becomes the first dance album since Beyonce‘s 2022 smash ‘Renaissance‘ to premiere at the chart’s peak.

Madonna’s first studio project since ‘Madame X’ made its way to the top of the all-genre chart in 2019, ‘Confessions II’ serves as the home to the Sabrina Carpenter-assisted ‘Bring Your Love‘ – the Pop icon’s biggest Hot 100 hit (as a song leader) since 2012’s ‘Give Me All Ur Luvin.’

Beyond the wave of critical acclaim the new album’s been afforded (including generating major GRAMMY buzz), the out-of-the-box commercial acclaim has not only helped the dancefloor diva drive right to the top of the charts but also into Billboard history books.

Her 10th project to land on the Billboard 200’s summit, Madge makes history as the first artist to rule the tally at least once over each of the following decades: 80s,  2000s, 2010s, and 2020s. The feat tops her previous accomplishment of being the first woman to have a top 10 hit on the chart in each of the last mentioned decades.

She also joins Taylor Swift as the only female artist to have double-digit #1 hits on the Billboard 200 and Hot 100.  While Madge has 10 on the former and 12 on the latter, Swift has 15 on both tallies.

Madonna’s “Confessions” stirred controversy because she whispered like she was sharing secrets no one wanted, and the lyrics made everyone cringe. Fans missed her old vibe, and the singles flopped harder than a bad dance move. Critics seemed suspiciously cheerful, like they were on the payroll. Plus, when you’re the Queen of Pop, any misstep feels like a royal scandal. Basically, it’s a perfect storm of awkward whispers, flop tunes, and shady reviews! 2/5 stars!

Grandmadonna ain’t got no pipes no more…Dance music’s her only lifeline, her safety net, and cant dance sheet yall feel me?
But when she hit the floor, she look like a mop got dragged through a hurricane.
All lack of coordination between legs and her upper body, all messy, but still tryna flex like she runnin’ the club…. 🙁

This is so well said. The critics literally all posted the eerily similar review, and it was obvious it was bought and paid for my Madonna’s team. The album is junk. Literally not one good song.

Man, I can’t even front, lookin’ at Madonna’s album cover got me feelin’ some kinda way straight up the worst mess I seen, right after Arianna and Lizzo tried to come through with that weak sauce. For real, they all out here tryna stunt but end up lookin’ like a hot mess express. Smh

That’s it after all the hype? Her fans on X and YTube are really selling this album like it’s the eighth wonder of the world. Meanwhile, I’m sitting here wondering if ‘mid’ is the new masterpiece ..
Her vocals? Pure gold if gold was actually just tin foil crumpled up and left in the rain. 😆
This album isn’t a ‘Ray of Light,’ it’s more like a flicker of a dying phone screen at 2%. :(I stopped halfway through because, honestly, my ears were begging for a break!

Yeah it’s awful music. Most of her fans are trend following lgbt people who will just say it’s a good album because they think that’s what’s cool to say.

Not a fan of her voice, the beats were good tho.

Congrats to Madonna, her longevity is impressive.

It didn’t. The critics all wrote like the exact same review with the same key words. The album is a mess and not good at all.

Congrats to Madonna and team on chart success. Im curious to see if the project has any legs starting next week…it does seem suspicious that ALL the reviews are glowing. My ears heard an album that sounds okay with a few danceable cuts if you don’t like circuit music.
