Dr. Dre Reveals He Uses AI in the Studio: "I’m Embracing It"

Dr. Dre is embracing artificial intelligence in the recording studio, and he has a clear message for fellow creatives who fear it.

More details below…

Speaking alongside longtime business partner Jimmy Iovine in a new interview, Dre dismissed suggestions that AI should automatically be viewed as a threat.

He told the New York Times:

“I think the only people that see it as a threat are the people who have trouble creating.”

Dre likened the resistance to previous waves of technological change in music, pointing to the arrival of drum machines and synthesizers:

“It’s a new tool for creativity. Some people are afraid of learning new things.”

Crucially, the 61-year-old clarified that he is not simply handing the creative reins over to a technology. Rather, he said he uses AI as a tool to explore what it might do with music he has already created:

“I’m embracing it. I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen with this.”

His comments arrive as the role of AI in music remains fiercely debated.

In recent weeks, Tyga confirmed using AI as a tool on his ‘$tarface’ album, similarly arguing that artists should embrace changing technology.

Dre, of course, has spent decades helping reshape the sonic landscape of Hip-Hop. Most recently, he reunited with Snoop Dogg for the ‘Missionary’ album.

Whether listeners embrace his latest technological evolution quite as readily remains to be seen.
