It’s the diva showdown of the year!
Pop titans Lady Gaga and Katy Perry are set to clash on next week’s chart with their latest offerings ‘Applause’ and ‘Roar’ respectively. Both songs, lifted (sooner than expected) in the last two days due to leak, have found themselves polarizing pop fans; Katycats roared for their ‘killer queen’ while little monsters greeted their leader’s latest with standing O.
But, now that both tunes are making their rounds on Youtube, Itunes, and the like, once objective music fans have even joined the virtual battle to duke out for their pick of the two.
You’ve had two days to play and replay. Now, tell us: who earned your applause?
‘Applause’ and ‘Roar’ – the lead singles from Gaga and Perry’s forthcoming albums ‘Artpop’ (November 11) and ‘Prism’ (October 22) respectively, were already the season’s most anticipated offerings before their unexpected head-to-head chart showdown.
Regardless of who emerges victorious in the battle, one thing is clear: history will be made. For, via Billboard reports, the digital battle is predicted to be the first time in history two songs pass the 400k mark of digital sales in one week. With industry insiders forecasting Perry’s day-and-a-half advantage may give her the upper edge, the distance between the two is not expected to be much.
The refreshing of next week’s chart is also expected to see Katy Perry score Hot 100 placement, while Gaga probably won’t (unless radio airplay picks up). But, as expected, the ultimate battle lies on the digital front. So far, Perry is also winning the Youtube streaming war with a 500k lead affront Lady Gaga.
But, as popular music evidences (especially in the redundant wave of EDM), stats and placements do not equate to quality. So, sales predictions and projections aside, based on the actual songs alone:

Exactly. I don’t want to sound delusional, but no one had her sound when Video Games first came out, and now quite a couple of artists are trying it. But she’s still very unique compared to most of the pop girls.

it went to the alternative genres a long time ago. what makes lana so great is her ability to bridge the gap between mainstream appeal and artistic presence. gaga has been close on many occasions but she comes off as a try hard (even though she doesnt need to cause she can sing circles around most of her contemporaries and can write a good melody). lana and gaga are cut from a similar cloth, lana is just more subtle.
as far as the two songs i think roar has a good sound, but who knows how much katy actually contributed. my girl bonnie is listed as a songwriter and based on that i’m guessing she wrote the lions share of the lyrics and melody. because of that, even though gagas song isn’t as anthemic and radio ready i still give her the edge cause i feel she had more hands in the pot artistically.
ultimately, i think this could be the biggest song of katy perrys career and i don’t think applause will do the same for gaga.

Both songs and artists are terribly generic let’s be honest (yes blahblah Gaga can sing and play the piano it doesn’t change the fact that all she releases is generic crap). However, out of these two songs Applause is catchier and easier to listen to which means it’ll probably end up winning.

With “Applause” like Gaga said, it was written and recorded over a year ago and she’s been sitting on it. That’s not organic, that’s not spontaneous. It´s not my fave type of song but it is still way better than the other one. Katy´s is unbelievable childish and basic, we heard it 1000 times before. Wasn´t she going for a more mature and darker sound? Lady Gaga´s song has another plus: it is a grower. Katy´s you herad it once you discovered everything in that first listen. Not to mention the struggle we´ll witness when she performs it live 🙂
