Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.
So, just as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’ allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.
This week we press play on ‘The First Night’ – Monica’s very first #1 hit on the Hot 100 as a solo artist. Following the history-making success that was ‘The Boy Is Mine’ (the song), Mo’s sophomore effort of the same name would find an impressive follow-up with the Diana Ross-sampled number. Leap-frogging over her Brandy-tag teamed tune this week in 1998 to hit the #2 spot, ‘Night’ eventually dethroned chart champion ‘I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing’ (Aerosmith) the week of October 3rd that year and not only gave the singer her first #1, but also her 6th top 10 entry.
Fast forward nearly 20 years later and we’re still just as in love with it now as we were then. Tuck in below to see the other familiar faces that lined the top 20 this week that year:

Mainstream Music is so wack today, I feel bad for those growing up on it!
Yes! “I should, I should make a move but I won’t…I don’t get down on the first night” that was my jam back in then. A successful black woman with three consecutive Hot 100 #1 hits during that era. Only brandy could’ve given her a run for her money back then and not one other soul. I love supporting my black artists that made history through diligence, determination, and hard work. I hope her new album, “Code Red”, goes platinum. She deserves it.
Your comment is everything! 🙂

Thanks! And you’re everything for spreading positivity!
^^ Both of you ladies above are speaking nothing but the truth.
Thanks! Monica has always been the truth and never steered away from it, so I needed to do Mo justice by keeping it 100.

Yawn! Usher and INOJ > that fake ghetto b****.
Aliyah struggled just to get a #1 album single and a grammy smh monica brandy >>> Aiyah (so overated… &basic compared to the real r&b kings & queens of the 90s) boys to men easy to say goodbye.
Bye girl fly girl Aaliyah is ICONIC and her music and legacy is very relevant today. Who the f*** is inspired by Monica in 2015? She has zero classic albums. She’s pretty much the Keyshia Cole of the 90s. Aaliyah will forever be greater than her big tooth, caked on make up ass.
Smh @ all these “mixtape” artist getting top 10 s these days i miss the 90s & mid 20000s
JD did his thing with that sample of Diana’s “Love Hangover” song. Excellent song. Still sounds good.
Yaaaaas…baby baby, tell me wassup…can ya hear me, or do I do I need to turn it up?

🙂
She never fails to bring it with her music, just right for me is my jam right now
Monica stans coming for the princess of R&B icon Aaliyah? Hmmmmm!!!!
90’s music is miles ahead of the music today in every way.
Mo was SO pretty during this era. I remember the Boy Is Mine video and I didn’t even know it was Mo until my Aunt said so. I was shocked. I had a huge crush on Aaliyah, Brandy and Monica back then as a kid.
Monica relevant? Had 2 b a retro rewind. It’s still funny that she beat up Brandy behind the scenes during this era. KIIII
This was my jam!! Everytime this came on, I had to dance!
Wow “Never Ever” by All Saints! I had forgotten that song. They were like the next group to appear after the Spice Girls.
My Fave songs in that top 20 are “Crush” by Jennifer Paige and “You´re still the one” by Shania Twain.
That said, the biggest phenomenon in 1998 was Celine Dion, Titanic and My Heart will go on. Celine sold 25-30 million albums in one year with her own album and Titanic the soundtrack sold 25-30 million albums more AT THE SAME TIME! Absolutely crazy. A phenomenon only comparable To Whitney and The Bodyguard or Michael and Thriller. Very few examples in music history.
