It looks like everybody didn’t attend this year’s MTV VMAs. Some of Keyshia Cole’s fans were wondering why she was absent from the ceremony and the singer revealed on her official Twitter page that she wasn’t even invited. Check out what she said below:
So Trey Songz is considered to be an “MTV artist” but Cole isn’t? The last time I checked she has sold almost 4 times the number of records that he has in the US & almost all of her singles ranked in the top 10 of he Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. I guess that unless she’s willing to take off all her clothes like Rihanna, sell sex like Cole or jump on the auto-tune bandwagon like the rest of the industry she will just have to settle for her usual seat at the BET Awards. That’s a damn shame.

I really don’t think Keyshia was throwing shade @ MTV. She was asked why she didn’t appear & answered honestly. This is a problem I have w/ MTV going way back anyway – the lack of diversified African American females on their award shows. They don’t care about straight R&B artists, particularly AA females. I can’t even remember the last time they had such an artist perform on any of their award shows.
The only AA females who regularly appear are Bee, Rhi & Alicia – and although all are AA, they have cross over appeal & hits while Keyshia’s greatest success is in the R&B field. I wouldn’t care if I was her – I’m sick of people downgrading R&B music like it’s sooooo far beneath pop music.
Yes, it’d be great to cross over & make more $$$ but if you stay in your lane and cultivate that fan base while continuing to make great music, I believe the cross over success will come eventually – not just to Keyshia but other R&B artists as well.

I don’t think she was bitter. I think she answered the question to the best of her ability. The MTV crowd (young white teens) don’t use her or her music. Notice all the black people on the VMAs are crossover acts. Whether they have sold millions of albums or not. Jason Derulo is more of a cross over act than Keyshia is. That is MTV’s demographics. That’s what they like. They are only here for Beyonce Rihanna, and Alicia Keys. and maybe now Nicki Minaj. Any other black female could stay home. I wouldn’t worry about the VMAs anyway. They don’t matter. She should be thinking about the Grammy’s and AMA’s.

I never expected her to be there in the first place, but I didn’t know that MTV told her that. MTV has their pics of favoritism. But it is no need to get upset because MTV hasn’t been a music station in 2 years, and they also canceled their Best R&B Video Category 4 years ago. And the BET Awards garner twice as many viewers than the VMAs anyway. MTV uses this award show as a crutch now anyway to keep their name.

Ok for starters Mtv allowed Keyshia to promote her second cd on their show a while back. Trey isn’t an Mtv artist either, but i guess because he’s whats popping right now they are jumping all over the bandwagon. I know that stung her a little bit, because yes she’s primarily an r&b artist, but still her sales are solid and she makes good music.

Keyshia isn’t an MTV artist, nor has she ever been. Or better yet, MTV hasn’t showcased R&B acts since God-knows-when. I’m guessing the sole explanation behind Trey’s crossover appeal is solely due to his association with Nicki Minaj (and the last I checked he got no nominations, either). It really doesn’t take a genius to figure it out. Until white people start getting into Keyshia as well, she’s not gonna be anywhere other than BET on VH1 Soul.
@LUV-LEE there is a clip floating around somewhere where Keyshia is doing some kind of radio interview and is asked what she thinks of Janet Jackson. Keyshia responds, “who?” and there is audible laugther and then she says, “I don’t listen to Janet Jackson” or something like that. The reason for the snub is simple: The music is adult contemporary. She may sell a lot of cds, but it is easy listening at best. Please don’t play the race card. MTV has played a TON of black artists in the past. The problem with MTV today is to get them to play any music at all.

Thebelief that Keyshia shouldn’t have been there because she hasn’t had any product out since ’08 is short-sighted. She doesn’t need to be apart of the show (performing or presenting) to be invited. There are alot of networking opportunites at awards shows (interviews) that would help an artists chances at a successful LP.

Tyga didn’t get invited individually, Cash Money/Young Money was invited. Hey got a ticket because he’s apart of that crew. He was allowed to go because of his affiliation, not his merit.
Tyga got in with Drake/Nicki whom are hot right now. Mtv is fake. They go with whatevers hot at that moment. Teairra Marie was probably with someone else, which is why she got in.
