There is no way to escape Ed Sheeran.
With what seemed like relentless promotion to assist, his comeback single – ‘Shape of You’ – took to #1 on the Hot 100 and has been there for seven non-consecutive weeks. Now, the tune’s parent album – ‘Divide’ – is following its lead.
As we reported here, the popularity of the project was so high its predicted first week sales were revised upward from 425k to 435k-445k. Just a few days later we learned the album even exceeded that.
Curious to know how many units his faithful #Sheerios snatched up during ‘Divide’s first full week of availability? The number lies after the jump:
First Week Sales: 451,000
Chart Placement: #1
Billboard reports:
Further, ÷ starts with 322,000 in traditional album sales — again, the largest sales frame for an album since 4 Your Eyez Only debuted with 363,000 copies sold.
Additionally, ÷ logs the biggest streaming week for an album since 4 Your Eyez Only’s debut frame. ÷ earned 90,000 streaming equivalent album units (which equates to 134.6 million streams of songs from the album in the tracking week).
With the impressive figure, Sheeran’s landed the highest opening week sales of any album released this year. Add to this, ‘Divide’ – the singer/songwriter’s follow-up to the hotly selling ‘X’ (2014) – doubled the first week sales of its predecessor. ‘X’ opened at #1 in 2014 to the sum of 209,000 sold.
Check in later this week when we provide the updated ‘Chart Check’ to reflect its latest refreshment.

slay
congrats!
its crazy to think how dramatically his life has changed
Black artist don’t sell like this, unless your Beyonce rihanna Alicia keys Nicki minaj future jay z Kendrick Lamar j cole Jennifer hudson
When has Jennifer Hudson sold like this? Her highest selling album isn’t even platinum
None of the Jennifer’s out there has sold that much lol
The only people on that list seeing decent sales are Beyonce, Jay Z and J Cole.
I don’t get it… When black artists make similar types of music… where is the marketing? where is the support? Ed sheeran is proof the brand is more important than the music
Or color
Similar?
There’s no black artist that is similar to ed ..
Right.
SN: I am thankful that for once a talented artist is actually selling like this! We need some Tracy Chapmans type artist’s back on the charts! This is AOTY material right here’ Congrats Ed!
Here we go with “black artists this, white artists that” ?
It’s easy to not care about something when it doesn’t effect you.
U know SUCICE BLONE probably still has BLACK SLAVES in his house….IGNORE THAT RACIST C***.
He’s probably like those white people from the movie “Get Out.” Lol
How does his fans buying his records affect black artists?…If JT fans buy his albums, it’s white privilege, when Beyoncé fans buy her albums, it’s because of her talent, I don’t know a single person that buy records based on the artist skin color, black people buy Adele’s albums too, why don’t blame them for not supporting they’re own artists. The same way they support white artists?….Just let that sink in.
One of the Swedish words for a black person is ‘neger’. Says it all really
The Swedish word “neger” (roughly equivalent to English “negro”) was considered neutral a few decades ago but is now considered offensive. It was coined in an era when the Swedish population was largely ethnically homogenous. The word is rarely used in print today, but sometimes occurs in colloquial speech.
yes i know they gonna start with it
Same thing I said about Justin Timberlake & all the Caucasian artist, they’ll sale 5 albums to most people of color 1 album …?
He makes good music, but his parents made one ugly child.
We’re all God’s children. Stfu.
Overrated
Glad to finally know the REAL sales. Over 300k copies first week is very good. However it is not monumental like the hype they were trying to create last week adding the streams and all that.
But congrats, it is more than Bruno and Abel´s first week sales from last fall (first week).
Cant talk black and white when Bey, J.Cole, Drake and Kendrick selling more!
Okay so that’s 4 black artist compared to an industry full of white ones
Why do people care about number so much of a album
