Jay-Z‘s critically acclaimed ‘4:44’ album was noteworthy not only because of the personal truths he shared, but also due to those of his mother revealed too.

On the much discussed track ‘Smile,’ Hov shared Gloria Carter‘s coming out story and she herself recited a spoken-word piece about her experience coming to terms with being a lesbian at the cut’s climax.

This resonated with many including LGBTQ advcocacy agency GLAAD who have announced that Carter will receive the Special Recognition Award at the upcoming GLAAD Media Awards.

Details below…

According to Billboard, Carter will attend the ceremony and will speak on the impact that coming out (especially as a woman of color) had on her life, her family and the world at more broadly.

Speaking on the honor, GLAAD’s president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in a statement:

“By sharing her truth with the world, Gloria Carter increased visibility of lesbian women of color at a critical time and sent a powerful message of empowerment to the entire LGBTQ community. Her story and the unconditional love that her family exhibits resonate with so many. The GLAAD Media Awards will be a critical platform to honor her work and further this important message.”

The news comes after Jay’s recent interview with David Letterman, during which he said:

“For [my mom] to sit in front of me and tell me ‘I think I love someone’ … I really cried. I cried because I was so happy for her that she was free.”
