It’s official: the only person who can beat Kanye West is Kanye West. The rapper’s latest effort, ‘My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’, has captured the top spot on the charts this week, selling an impressive 518,775 copies. This means that the record has sold almost 70k more than his previous effort, ‘808 & Heartbreak’, which debuted with just over 450k in the same week two years prior.
In fact, West has managed to outperform even Nicki Minaj whose ‘Pink Friday’ debut LP sold 371,049 units. Minaj has no reason to worry, however, as her nemesis Lil Kim’s debut album, ‘Hardcore’, entered the charts at #11 back in November 1996.
Ne-Yo managed to land a position in the top 10 at #8 with ‘Libra Scale’ which sold over 117k copies. This accomplishment marks the highest entry for the album on any chart worldwide as it missed the top 10 in every territory including the UK where it debuted at #11 despite his ‘Beautiful Monster’ single peaking at #1.
There were several other interesting moves on this week’s tally. Rihanna’s ‘Loud’ LP experienced a 35% dip in sales, selling another 133,662 copies despite the Thanksgiving rush. On the other hand, Taylor Swift’s ‘Speak Now’ had a 71% upsurge, claiming the #3 spot with 255,991 records sold. Finally, Christina Aguilera’s ‘Burlesque’ soundtrack shifted 62, 514 units, entering the chart at #18.

Nicki outsold Lil Kim because Hip Hop has a bigger fanbase than it had before. There also more promo outlets nowadays i.e. internet, youtube, twitter and so on. Nicki has had also more collaborations and hype. I think best Female MC would be Missy Elliot as she is the most creative and has the best songs. My list would be Missy Elliot, Kim, McLite, Eve and then maybe Nicki. But can you believe that with her first album she had a more album sales than Rihanna who had five albums and 9 No 1 singles. Rihanna must think that the album No1 spot is allergic to her and sneezing her into the top five everytime she releases one. How else can you explain Kesha, Katy Perry having a number 1 albums.

You guys are crazy. Why are you bashing Nicki and Rihanna? First off, you need to understand that Rihanna never sells largely in weeks. Each week, Rihanna sells decently and moderately, but overall she reaches big sales. The first week sales are important, no doubt, but overall sales are way bigger.
Gaga sold 24k FIRST WEEK with The Fame and that’s nearing 4x Platinum – one of the hugest album sellers in the past few years. Longevity>>>First week sales.
Maybe Rihanna isn’t selling hugely first week, but she always goes AT LEAST Platinum.
As for Nicki, these are the SECOND BEST FIRST WEEK SALES FOR A FEMALE RAP ARTIST EVER. Like I said, the first week sales aren’t a huge deal, and even Nicki has said that herself, but I do see this selling lots each week. People talk about how Hardcore went 2x Platinum but I’m willing to bet that in 2 years (the amount of time Hardcore took to go 2x Platinum) that Pink Friday will go 2x Platinum.
You guys can talk about how bad Pink Friday was, but tons of bad albums have sold hugely. Yes, the matter of whether the album is good or not is important but that’s only opinion. Sales are factual and much more important.
I know that Nicki has had more promotion than Kim, but Hardcore took SIX MONTHS to go Gold, when Pink Friday will very likely go Gold next week.
I also must say that you cannot call Kim the Queen of Rap (if anyone has said that…) because Missy Elliot is much more successful, creative, and talented by most standards (my opinion and many others’). Missy had the 2nd best first week sales for a female rapper’s album until now. Missy has shown so much creativity and is above Kim in every retrospect.
Lastly, why is it that Lauryn is regarded as one of the best female rappers to date when she sang a LOT on The Miseducation but Nicki is a sellout for singing on her album? I’m not comparing Nicki to Lauryn because Nicki has a LOT LOT LOT LOT LOT of work to do if she ever wants to reach that status, but it’s just a point.
Nicki could go a few ways from here – she could become more similar to Missy, Kim, or Eve. My bet’s Missy. In 20 years, looking back at Nicki, I think we’ll see a rapper that was very similar to Missy. At least Missy, unlike Kim, never insulted Nicki. Missy is extremely intelligent and amazing, while Kim is a sociopath who is losing fans left and right.
Lastly, Kanye’s creativity on MBDTF was epic and he did deserve the top spot. I’m very proud of Nicki, though I do wish that she had pushed 400k. Unlike some people, I’m not disappointed at ALL with my copy. As for Ne-Yo, those are huge numbers for someone who’s having his own Bionic right now…

Anyways, I’m not a huge fan of either Oasis or The Beatles but The Beatles were legendary and did really make huge waves so that’s an insane thing for Oasis to say.
It’s sad to me that some artists think they’re doing themselves a favor by overhyping material when it really doesn’t ever seem to help. Um…I’ve known about Nicki for just as long. I also understand what you mean about the rap world, but I think she’ll get people back on her side now that’s releasing “Moment 4 LIfe”. I just don’t know why the rap community doesn’t let their artists EXPERIMENT like Nicki has been doing.

First of all, congratulations to Kanye, Nicki, and Ne-Yo for doing their thing- especially Kanye because MBDTF is a GREAT album! His critical acclaim is much deserved.
Nicki. I like her. i like her a lot. But Pink Friday is simply an average album. I was so disappointed with this album because I feel that thought that she had to dumb down (that is, pop-up) her album in order for her to be successful. The fact of the matter is she could have produced a critically acclaimed album that she is VERY CAPABLE of producing, while still being a mainstream success. Since we are talking about Lauryn Hill, this is precisely what she did. “Miseducation” went on to sale 18 million copies worldwide (8 million is the US), ultimately, because she REFUSED to compromise her work not BECAUSE she compromised it. Nicki has chosen to take a different path and that is certainly her choice; it is HER career. However, one average album does not a “Queen of Hip Hop” make- sorry. I will continue to follow Nicki because she is truly dope.

Well back in 1996, a artist didn’t need their album to debut at #1 for it to be a hit, Hard Core only peaked at #11 and ended up selling nearly 2.5 million copies and now regarded as one of the best albums of the 90’s as well a classic album in hip-hop. Aaliyah’s One in a Million sold nearly 9 million copies worldwide and only peaked at #18, The Boy is Mine by Monica peaked at #8 and sold around 8.5 million worldwide. So back in the 90’s it wasn’t a requirement to have a #1 album, in today’s industry, if you don’t a #1 album or least a top 5 album, your considered unsuccessful. I will give Nicki her props for selling 375,000 because she now has the 2nd best first week sales for a female rapper behind Lauryn Hill who sold 425,000 and her album ended up selling 20 million worldwide and is regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time. I’m not hating on Nicki Minaj but the shade that was threw at Lil’ Kim was not needed and I highly doubt that Pink Friday will sell more than 2 million copies, I see that album selling around 1.25 million, look at Drake, his album was expected to sell in the range of 2 – 3 million and it’s only sold around 1.2 million and around 1.6 million worldwide

Not the biggest rap/hip hop fan, have liked some in the past…nowadays I began to find it boring. However Minaj has injected some life into this game for me. I bought Pink Friday, listened to it twice over, back to back, what surprised me was that she can really sing, what surprised me was how broad the CD was, R/B, pop and rap..and I can get why true hip hop and rap fans are disappointed, when Minaj goes hard, it’s worth it, and I could see why some feel she dumbed it down.
BUT, to the people who think she won’t be around, hell no, this woman is talented, gifted, really smart, and writes her own, so she gon BE around. Well ermmmm I’m kind of taken back at some of these comments and kind of forgot what the original post was about as I thought I had dropped into a hate post (not sure who the hate was aimed at – mainkly Rihanna to be fair)
I mean let’s first as a mainly urban audience commend our artists on achieving anything in this day and age where illegal music is so accesible its so easy for numbers to convey that an artist is not popular when that is so far from the truth. Rihanna has grown musically so much with this album and for someone who just released an album a year ago her sales are really quite impressive please note they are also her best in her whole career. Say what you want about her but shes doing well (she held number one spot in the Uk for nine weeks or so with umbrellla Kudos for that alone !!!) Then we have Kanye who despite the fact of facing public scrutiny for the Taylorgate has still managed to make an impression on the charts and last but by no means Nicki Minaj whos following is mostly youths who are facing unemployment and poverty who would by far prefer to go and download the album ( Dont get me wrong thats not all her fans) has managed to sell
300k+ even if they were all at 4.99 that would still be 1.5 million !!!
So come on guys instead of getting t each other and hationg and fighting lets get together and celebrate the good efforts and results of our fellow people !!

Yes, Nicki Minaj sold a good amount but you cannot compare the marketing schemes of today to the true hussle of the rappers from the past. Yestday’s artists had to have talent. They couldn’t just use s** or some extenal event to sell a CD.
Also some consideration must be given to the favored status the music industry gives its artsists with 360 record deals. Nicki has stepped into a great position. She’s has nothing on Lil Kim however!

You are a breath of fresh air in here. You can articulate your points of view intelligently, and you’re right: Ri will do Plat like she always does. And that’s okay.
I will speak for myself and say that I think part of the “flopping” talk is because of what she did GGGB. I thought that the next era, would be her “B’day era” where her album would be so anticipated that she would do big #s the first week and be consistent with her GGGB sales.
It didn’t happen. So to me, she’s not there as a major artist YET. Not a bad career, by any means, but not a major artist. At least not the kind of that Rihanna stans want her to be. Can she be? She’s young enough, but she would have to improve some things. The one thing that disappointed me is that last era, it seems she had more imput on her work but this era she didn’t and that’s regression. The sales issues come secondary to THAT. Now this is just my opinion and I know a lot of Rihanna fans would not like what I am saying but I think you’re mature enough to handle what I am saying.

Anyways, I do agree. The debate over whether Rihanna is a major artist is highly debatable. I, personally, feel that she is but there is always room for improvement. Her sales (first week) could improve, but I’m only worried that she stays consistent with sales. As for her input, I agree that it’s odd that Loud has way less Rihanna input than Rated R, but I feel that her bigger issue is live performance.
However, that seems to be improving amazingly.

If this was 1999-2002, then yeah I would agree. But since 2003, Bey has been outselling her WW and the US. Now of course, Britney does move units still and does beacoup touring $$$$. However, there IS a reason why Beyoncé is the Billboard Female Artist of the Decade.
They are both part of the Mt Rushmore of Artists(Gaga, and Alicia with them) and 3 out of the 4 are legit legends(Don’t Forget Alicia is the Billboard R&B Artist of the Decade). You can have more than one legend in a generation, you know? Like for example: Prince, MJ and Luther all from the same generation, all legends.

She has gotten better as a performer and that’s the next level for her to go, because all of the major mainstream artists/entertainers are great touring acts. Even when they stop selling, that they can just tour and that keeps their longevity. Look at Madonna.
And that can open up door for possibly other things that would ensure longevity apart from recording. I won’t say that I am a fan(I do LOVE Russian Roulette, SOS and DSTM though), but I do root for her in the context that there aren’t a lot of true black female stars(Beyonce and Alicia are the only real ones 30 and under) out there and she’s *RIGHT THERE*.
She’s bigger than say, Ciara, Ameriie, Keri and etc, but there is another level for her to go and I would love to see her go the extra mile to do it. Work on her vocals more(she’s gotten better there too but she does get lazy sometimes especially with her pitch accuracy), and work on her confidence so that her ability to work the stage shows through

Exactly! Rihanna is so close to being one of the really successful pop stars but it hasn’t happened yet. Once she improves her vocals and brings more of a presence to the stage, all will be great.
