Missy Elliott may have paved the road a lot of her female Rap successors cruise down, but Monday (October 17) she was officially honored with a street named after her.
In August, the city council of Portsmouth, Virginia, the hometown of the 4-time GRAMMY winner, voted unanimously to rename its McLean Street to Missy Elliott Boulevard.
Finally unveiled Monday while thousands of her fans (including celebrity friends Timbaland, The Clark Sisters, Trey Songz, and others) looked on, hop inside to see Miss celebrate the historic milestone.
“We’re beyond proud of Missy’s accomplishments and so thrilled to have the opportunity to celebrate her,” said City Manager Tonya Chapman in a release ahead of Monday’s ceremony. “Missy’s trailblazing career is a testament that when you dream big, anything is possible.”
“I’m crying Tears of Joy,” Elliott wrote on Instagram. “I have been BLESSED so much but this right here hits my heart differently.”
The street-naming comes nearly a year after Missy was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Click here to read more about that.
