2025 GRAMMYs: Tems Makes History with the First Solo Win of Her Career

Published: Sunday 2nd Feb 2025 by Rashad

Already the owner of a shiny golden gramophone thanks to the 2022 smash hit ‘Wait for U‘ led by Drake and Future, Nigerian hitmaker Tems is no stranger to accepting GRAMMYs.

Yet, the 2025 ceremony came with quite the milestone for the singer-songwriter as it brought the first time she delivered an acceptance speech for the coveted trophy by her lonesome.

Up for three awards on Sunday night (February 2), Tems – bested in Best R&B Song and Best Global Music Album categories – captured the Best African Music Performance for her song ‘Love Me JeJe,’ defeating Chris Brown, Burna Boy, Yemi Alade, and Asake in the process.

Not only does it come as the first solo GRAMMY she’s won, but she’s also the first Nigerian artist in the award show’s history to triumph in the category.

The GuiltyBeatz track acted as the second single from her critically acclaimed, 2024 debut album ‘Born in the Wild.’

An 8-time career nominee overall, Tems is now the proud owner of two GRAMMYs after the first came for winning the Best Melodic Rap Performance award in 2023.
