This month saw Meghan Markle and Prince Harry send shockwaves through newsrooms the world over when they announced their decision to step back as “senior royals”
Coming on the heels of unprecedented media scrutiny (of Markle especially), the news sparked ample debate and an admission of from the Queen that internal discussions would commence to reconcile the way forward.
Now, details have been revealed.
News of the agreement first was shared by The Queen. She said:
A statement from Buckingham Palace went on to add:
“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are grateful to Her Majesty and the Royal Family for their ongoing support as they embark on the next chapter of their lives.
As agreed in this new arrangement, they understand that they are required to step back from their Royal duties, including official military appointments.
They will no longer receive funding for Royal duties.
With the Queen’s blessing, the Sussexes will continue to maintain their private patronages and associations.
While they can no longer formally represent The Queen, the Sussexes have made clear that everything they do will continue to uphold the values of Her Majesty.”
As reported, the couple and son Archie will split their time between Canada and the UK and, per the new agreement, will be free to explore other commercial ventures.
They will retain their Frogmore Cottage residence, but pay back the public funds used for its recent renovation.
Here’s wishing them the best on their new chapter.
