Bad Bunny continues to make a splash across a multitude of mediums.

Because while dominating the musical landscape, the multi-hyphenate star is set to shine on the big screen as the lead in Marvel’s newly announced film franchise, ‘El Muerto.’

Moments ago at CinemaCon, it was revealed that the performer – born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio – will play the newest superhero in the Mavel/Sony Pictures portfolio of films.

In doing so, Bad Bunny becomes the first-ever Latino actor to headline a live-action Marvel movie.

Per Marvel’s official site, El Muerto (aka Juan-Carlos Estrada Sanchez) is a wrestler whose powers are passed down by ancestry in the form of a mask that gives superhuman strength. In comics, his narrative is one that has interwoven with that of Spider-Man – with the pair both dueling and teaming up to defeat evil.

According to studio execs, Bad Bunny’s ‘El Muerto’ will be introduced as an antihero on the cusp of inheriting his father’s power.

The film is presently set to premiere in theaters on January 12, 2024.

Speaking on the role, Bad Bunny gushed:

“An amazing experience. David (Leitch) is awesome. I loved working with him on my first film and now with this opportunity to bring El Muerto to life. It’s amazing, it’s incredible. I love wrestling. I grew up watching wrestling and I’m a wrestler. I’m a former champion so this is why I love this character. I think it’s the perfect role to me and it will be epic.”

In many ways, the nabbing this role reaffirms how uniquely central wrestling has been in the colorful star’s narrative. Indeed, today’s news follows a number of high-profile stints in the WWE – the most recent being the 2022 Royal Rumble in January.
