Mo’Nique, Netflix Reach Settlement in Discrimination & Retaliation Lawsuit

New updates have arrived in the case of Mo’Nique and streaming giant Netflix.

More details below…

Previously, Mo’Nique sued Netflix over discrimination and retaliation, however, both sides have now moved to have the case dismissed, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The ordeal began back in 2017 when Netflix showed interest in Mo’Nique for a comedy special during a time it was aggressively ramping-up its stand-up content. However, the negotiations between the two parties did not go very far and the Oscar-winner did not agree with what she considered a low opening offer of $500,000 for a one-hour show. It is worth noting that Netflix would also have control over the copyright and retaining all audio-only rights to the special.

Mo’Nique protested the offer and claimed that it was discriminatory, which led Netflix to end negations then and there.

As a result, she sued Netflix for refusing to negotiate beyond what it had originally offered. In particular, she claimed that the service of systematically underpaying Black women and pointed to several other comedians who did comedy special and made more than their offer to her. This led to her calling for a boycott of Netflix.

A federal judge then sided with her original claim that Netflix’s failure to negotiate an opening offer consistent with its normal practice, which typically leads to increased compensation, constitutes an “adverse employment action for purposes of a retaliation claim.”

Moreover, Michael Parks, the person representing Mo’Nique, said that “The matter has been amicably resolved.”

As of reporting, Netflix has not responded to the new information.

Good for her. Hopefully she will start to focus on positivity. I just have to say that her sister was wrong to call her out in that way. No matter how much you disagree or see fault in your sister’s actions, you don’t publicly reprimand her, you tell her directly how you feel and pray for her and that’s as far as it should go IMO.
