Secretly married in 1994 when he was 27-years-old and she was only 15-years-old, shocking details about their annulled union – including reports of her pregnancy and other abuses at the time – left jaws dropped in the court room and beyond once the story broke in the media.
Despite the disturbing, yet highly publicized recounts from witnesses and people close to them, actor Isaiah Washington – who worked with the ‘One in a Million’ diva in the 2000 film ‘Romeo Must Die’ – is adamant she was not a victim in the sordid affair.

In an interview published to YouTube earlier this week (October 11), the former ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ star was spotted at VladTV dishing on everything from his career and the controversies that have come along with it to his thoughts on happenings in modern Pop culture.
When quizzed about his time with Aaliyah, he admitted he had a “crush” on the then-21-year-old “mysterious” star in part because she was so “mature.”
Once the interviewer asked Washington about his thoughts on her relationship with Kelly, the 59-year-old asserted he didn’t subscribe to the narrative she was a victim of the GRAMMY winner’s. In fact, he insinuated the union was a business move that she – at 15-years-old – was very much in charge of.
“She was very in control of her being, but she was a businesswoman too. Super smart,” he shared at the clip’s 1:48 mark. “I think she was in control of that situation even at her age.”
Later in the interview, he doubled down on the notion by suggesting her control was a result of her “maturity.”
“She was 15 going on 30, so she was in control of that whole situation,” he relayed. “I don’t judge her, but she was very smart and very mature and very in control of her situation. I don’t believe one minute that Aaliyah was made to do anything that Aaliyah didn’t want to do.”
“For the record, I disagree with Isaiah on this. That’s why I brought up Aaliyah’s age at the time,” Vlad wrote on an Instagram post referring to the clip.

That’s not a field that you can judge with just your eyes. Even if she thought that’s what she wanted to do, she was too young to be in control of anything like that. Children don’t have the capacity to make decisions like that next to adults because their judgement comes from that of a child. No matter what the conversations were, it was always going to be his thoughts leading hers. So for him to give this to us like she was a full grown woman is borderline grooming in itself as if he’s trying to convince me that any of that shxt is okay.
