The Oscar-winning actress will play Helen of Troy in Christopher Nolan‘s upcoming adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic. Her casting has sparked criticism from figures including Elon Musk, who called the decision “grossly insulting to the Greek people.”
Speaking to Elle magazine, Nyong’o rejected the backlash.
“I’m very supportive of Chris’s intention with it and with the version of this story that he is telling, Our cast is representative of the world.”
She added:
“This is a mythological story. I’m not spending my time thinking of a defence. The criticism will exist whether I engage with it or not.”
Musk doubled down on Friday, sharing his stance that “Chris Nolan is an anti-White racist.” The director has not responded to the criticism.
Nyong’o won an Oscar in 2014 for ‘12 Years a Slave.’ She has also starred in ‘Black Panther’ and ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens.’
‘The Odyssey’ features an ensemble cast including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron. The film hits US and UK cinemas on July 17.
