Sherri Shepherd is heading back to Broadway and making history in the process.

The Emmy-winning comedian, actress, and host has been tapped to play the Genie in Disney’s ‘Aladdin’, becoming the first woman to take on the iconic role on Broadway.

Shepherd will begin her limited engagement on October 16 and remain with the production through January 3, 2027.

Sharing her excitement about the major milestone, Shepherd said:

“Joining ‘Aladdin’ on Broadway is an absolute dream come true – and an incredible honor. The Genie is such an iconic character, and I’m beyond excited to bring my own energy, humor, heart, and a little bit of magic to this role.”

Reflecting on the history-making nature of the casting, she added:

“To step on that stage as the first woman to ever play the Genie is something I don’t take lightly. I’m ready to rub the lamp, unleash some magic, and have the time of my life on Broadway.”

The role marks Shepherd’s return to Broadway after previously making history as the first Black actress to portray the Evil Stepmother in ‘Cinderella.’

It also extends an especially busy chapter for the star. Earlier this year, her daytime talk show ‘Sherri’ wrapped after four seasons, while she will next be seen leading Lifetime’s ‘Angel in the Rubble’, premiering September 12.
