Welcome to Retro Rewind, the TGJ original feature launched to celebrate TV and Film’s informative past.

Today, we honour ‘South Central’, a hard hitting TV show fronted by Tina Liford.

In it, a divorced mother is forced to raise three children without support from her ex-husband as she mourns the death of a son who was murdered by a gang member some time earlier.

With help from Larenz Tate, Liford and her cast pulled viewers into a world filled with highs, lows, ups and down for one season and saw it come to an end after it was cancelled by Fox.

Today sees cinemas across the UK turn a shade of blue. For, Paramount UK have unleashed the hotly anticipated Rapman flick ‘Blue Story.’

Eagerly anticipated, the action-packed picture tells the tragic tale of a friendship between Timmy and Marco, two young boys from opposing postcodes.

Against all odds, they form a friendship; one which ends up tested to the max.

Ahead of the film’s release, That Grape Juice caught up with Rapman, as well as Stephen Odubola, Karla-Simone Spence, Kadeem Ramsay, Rohan Nedd, Khali Best, Junior Afolabi Salokun and Eric Kofi-Abrefa.

This Friday brings with it the UK release of ‘Harriet’ starring Grammy, Tony, and Emmy winner Cynthia Erivo.

Ahead of its arrival, this week That Grape Juice gave a select few the chance to see the hotly anticipated biopic early at our exclusive pre-release screening.

Hosted in partnership with Universal Pictures, the Central London event saw our guests become some of the first in the country to see Erivo shine as activist Harriet Tubman in the production, which also stars Janelle Monae and Leslie Odom Jr.

Jacqueline Shepherd oversaw the evening as host; while invitees were treated to drinks and nibbles courtesy of Crumb Coat UK. They also took home goodie bags featuring must-haves from Palmers UK, OffBlak, Red Red Stews, Indie Bay, Ombar Chocolate, Bells & Whistles, OluOlu, Virtue Drinks, and Well & Truly.

Jussie Smollett is fighting back.

The ‘Empire’ actor found himself at the center of one of the year’s most shocking stories; a story which saw him initially deemed the victim (after an alleged hate attack) only to himself become the suspect of criminal behavior.

The latter saw Smollett charged with orchestrating the entire attack and paying off  brothers Abimbola Osundairo and Olabinjo Osundairo to stage a beatdown.

And yet in a dramatic twist, the criminal case collapsed in the preliminary phase and the 36-year-old looked to be off the hook. That is until the City of Chicago filed suit against him demanding he pay back the $130,000 to recoup the cost of the investigation.

Now, Smollett – who has always maintained his innocence – is retaliating.
