Today, we celebrate years of a Pop pillar. ‘Oops… I Did It Again’ by the iconic Britney Spears is this week’s From The Vault pick.
After a spectacular debut era, the world was ready to discover if the young diva would be able to surpass (or at least match) the success she scored with ‘… Baby One More Time’.
Armed with the confidence of having a surefire hit on their hands, Team Spears came blazing with ‘Oops…’
Helmed by Max Martin and Rami Yacoub – the masterminds behind Spears’ debut smash – the release proved to be the seismic hit all involved were hoping for. It peaked inside the Top 10 in the US and hit #1 in over 15 countries – including the UK, Australia and Canada.
Beyond the song’s infectiousness, its Nigel Dick directed video undoubtedly turbo-charged its performance (and cultural resonance).
Hugged by her red hot bodysuit and backed by an army of dancers, Britney is presented as the leader of Mars and greets a lost astronaut with a full-on performance of the jam.
Sexier, edgier and fiercer, the clip (which was choreographed by Tina Landon) saw Spears stepping further into her womanhood. Much to the delight of the press – and the dismay of the conservative masses.

What a difference 20 years can make.

Nonetheless, as has been the case for the past decade, we’re continually rooting for Britney and are hopeful she recaptures the magic she once possessed in earnest. So as to make the whole world say “she did it again!”
