Beyonce blazed back onto the scene with her seismic seventh studio album ‘Renaissance’ and has royally rocketed straight to the top of the Billboard 200.
If you weren’t dancing to this song 16 years ago, were you even on this planet?
Today’s From The Vault pick comes courtesy of the Pop force of that time – Justin Timberlake.
This week’s pick is the super slick ‘SexyBack.’
Served up as the first taste of JT’s 2006 sophomore album ‘FutureSex/LoveSounds,’ ‘Sexy’ was produced by Timbaland – who also features on the song.
The EDM-tinged single not only ushered in a new sound for Timberlake, but it was also very influential for the music landscape at large from 2006 to the end of the decade.
A global success, the track reached the #1 spot in the UK, Germany, Australia, and Canada. It spent seven consecutive weeks at the top of the US Billboard Hot 100.
Additionally, ‘Sexy’ snagged a GRAMMY in 2007 for Best Dance Recording.
Michael Haussmann directed its accompanying visual, which featured Justin and actress Elena Anaya as two rival spies. Lensed in Barcelona, the clip successfully translates the song’s hyper-hectic sonics onto film.
The NSYNC alumnus won the most prizes at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards thanks to this video alongside those for subsequent singles ‘My Love’ and ‘What Goes Around.’
*********
15+ years after literally ruling the charts, it seems the masses are not as on board with Timberlake as they once were.
From being branded a “culture-vulture” from some corners of the net to being held accountable for the way he treated both Britney Spears and Janet Jackson in the early 00s, it looks like the modern Pop cultural sphere is not quite ready to let JT’s early-day mishaps slide.
For yours truly, who has long been chanting #JusticeForJanet and questioned the seemingly automatic placement of Timberlake above his more naturally gifted peers, it’s slightly perplexing that this reckoning is so…retroactive.
Still, hits have been made and history has been written. So, kudos to Mr. Timberlake for dropping this banger.
Nicki Minaj is strutting forward with ferocity towards the release of her brand new single ‘Super Freaky Girl’ – which is due this coming Friday (August 12).
Before then, Onika joined forces with her Young Money comrades Drake and Lil Wayne in Toronto at the OVO Fest.
Beyond their collective showing, Minaj hit the stage solo and delivered a teaser showing of ‘Super Freaky Girl.’
Britney Spears has clapped back at her ex-husband Kevin Federline in the wake of the former dancer’s remarks about their teenage sons.
As reported, the 44-year-old sat down for an explosive interview – in which he said the controversial conservatorship “saved” the singer.
Most notable, though, was his seeming inference that Spears’ social media posts (such as nude selfies) had caused fractures with the former couple’s kids – Sean Preston and Jayden James.
Federline unpacked how their sons find it “tough” having to deal with the scrutiny at school and beyond. He added:
“The boys have decided they are not seeing her right now. It’s been a few months since they’ve seen her. They made the decision not to go to her wedding.”
40-year-old Spears took to Instagram to respond and didn’t hold back.
Britney Spears and Kevin Federline have largely kept mum about each other in the wake of their 2006 split and the snowball effect it’s had on their respective lives.
However, Federline has given an explosive new interview that has left the singer’s new husbandSam Asghari less than impressed.
For much of the 00s, Nelly and Ashanti served as couple goals.
However, the pair went their separate ways in 2014 after 10 years together.
Having dated during a time before social media laid every facet of a celebrity relationship bare, the performers somehow balanced being open about their union while never actually confirming it.
Recently, the rapper and singer have been more transparent about their split. Indeed, Ashanti revealed that, prior to an impromptu hug on stage at VERZUZ last year, she hadn’t seen her former beau since they called it quits. She added that they hadn’t spoken in the immediate moments after that showing.
Well, it appears there’s been more reconciliation in the period that followed.
Because last night (August 5) in Oakland, Nelly brought out the songbird to perform their hit‘Body On Me.’
While Beyonce‘s ‘Renaissance’ album no doubt comes packed to the brim with many a dancefloor jam, the LP is being celebrated for its powerful vocal moments too.
One track in particular that has magnetized many a singer is ‘Plastic Off The Sofa.’
The latest to onboard the burgeoning viral challenge is none other than Chloe Bailey.
The songstress, who is signed to Queen Bey’s Parkwood Entertainment, showcased her pipes with a soaring rendition of the track.
