Scribbled in history books for some good and not-so-good reasons, 2016 brought with it some of modern music’s most memorable moments.

Now, as the year draws to a close, TGJ is reflecting on 31 moments that rocked – and to some degree shaped – the Urban and Pop musical landscape as we know it.

Lastly, we say our final farewell to a number of legendary acts whose timeless contributions to music and entertainment will never be forgotten.

While nemesis Mariah Carey‘s continued social media dragging for a shambolic NYE performance is making Lambs work overtime in her defense, Jennifer Lopez is still garnering praise for shutting down Carson Daly‘s ‘NYE’ special.

Originally reported to have traded in NYE work for “family time,” the singer/actress had a change of heart and took to Daly to render some fierce renditions of her prized hits ‘Waiting for Tonight,’ ‘On the Floor,’ ‘If You Had My Love,’ ‘Love Don’t Cost a Thing,’ and more.

Tuck in below to see why the applause for J.Lo is still running over even a day later…

Mariah Carey delivered what could easily be classified as the worst performance of her 25+ year career on ‘Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin Eve with Ryan Seacrest’ tonight (December 31).

Helping more than one million people camped out in Times Square painfully ring in the new year (and don’t forget the millions watching at home), the annual ABC special got a dose of updated versions of the diva’s hits ‘We Belong Together,’ ‘Emotions,’ and more.

When not talking through the songs, Carey’s backing track gave out at multiple points during the performance.  Guess who gave zero f*cks?  That’s right…Miss Mimi.

As we reported here, renowned gospel singer/pastor Kim Burrell came under some serious fire after going on a graphic homophobic rant during a recent sermon.

Once the video of her statements started making its rounds the ‘Try Me Again’ singer quickly tried to clean up the mess with a clarification:

I never said LGBT last night. I said S-I-N and whatever falls in the sin was preached.

Apparently it was too little, too late.  As of time reporting members of her faithful following on Twitter and Facebook – many of whom are members of the LGBTQ community – are roasting the revered songstress for her unwelcome remarks.  See highlights below:

Thanks to a $.69 “holiday sale” on iTunes, ‘Earned It’ singer The Weeknd (born Abel Tesfaye) has finally earned his third #1 single on the Hot 100.

14 weeks after its debut (and after a lengthy 8-week run at #2 behind rap duo Rae Sremmurd‘s smash single ‘Black Beatles’), ‘Starboy’ – the title track to Tesfaye’s third album (which hit #1 on the Billboard 200) – ascended to the tally’s perch on the wings of strong digital downloads and streaming performance.  Billboard reports:

[‘Starboy’ logged] the chart’s greatest week-over-week sales gain (up 28,000), surging by 49 percent to 86,000 downloads sold in the week ending Dec. 22. “Starboy” tops the Hot 100 after eight nonconsecutive weeks at No. 2, tying for the most weeks spent at No. 2 before leading the list. It matches Justin Bieber‘s “Sorry,” which ruled at last on the Jan. 23, 2016, chart, and OutKast‘s “The Way You Move,” featuring Sleepy Brown (Feb. 14, 2004).”

Congratz are certainly in order for Weeknd and his ‘Starboy’ co-stars Daft Punk.  The achievement marks the group’s first run at #1 in the U.S.

Tuck in below to see who else filled out this week’s refreshed Billboard Hot 100:

Now, we’ll reflect on the collection of albums and singles whose barks were certainly bigger than their bites.  For, considering the hype that preceded them, great expectations were placed on their respective commercial performances.

Sadly, they failed to meet them…
