The stairway to the top of the Billboard 200 for Schoolboy Q found a serious block in the form of Canadian emcee Drake.

The hitmaking ‘Views’ rapper, whose 9 week grip on the tally’s top spot was interrupted by Blink 182 this week, is already reportedly on track to reoccupy the #1 position next week.

Welcome to Retro Rewind, the TGJ original feature carved out to celebrate TV and Film’s glorious past.

Today we make our way back to 1993, the year in which the world was introduced to ‘The Ricki Lake Show.’

Following her standout performance in John Walter’s ‘Hairspray’, Lake caught the attention of Columbia Pictures Television who, with the full support of the Garth Ancier and Gail Steinberg, built the series for the 24-year-old.

A staple in many a 90s baby’s entertainment diet, the show would become one of the decade’s highest-rated series, rivalling ‘The Jerry Springer Show’, Jenny Jones and Sally Jesse Raphael’s ‘Sally’ with support from a memorable theme tune created by Madonna’s ‘Holiday’ producer,Jellybean Benitez.

Gwen Stefani continues to pound the promotional pavement in support of new album ‘This Is What The Truth Feels Like.’

The “era” has been quite the roller-coaster for the No Doubt diva; indeed, despite opening at #1, the LP’s accompanying tour has been marred by so-so ticket sales.

Still, she’s not stressing, she’s pressing…on.

The TODAY Show Summer Concert Series was the 46-year-old’s latest stop.

There, she performed a mix of her most memorable hits including ‘Hollaback Girl’ and ‘The Sweet Escape,’ as well as new numbers such as ‘Make Me Like You.’

As if the summer isn’t already hot enough, July has simply been brimming and blazing with highly anticipated releases from some of pop’s heaviest hitting female artists.

Just last night alone pop princess Britney Spears and Katy Perry dropped their long-awaited new releases.  For fans of Spears, the new song, ‘Make Me,‘ came after a year-long await and followed the failed, Iggy Azalea-assisted ‘Pretty Girls.’  For #KatyCats, the tune, ‘Rise,’ follows releases found from her 2013 chart-topping set ‘Prism.’

Spears may have shot to #1 on iTunes quicker than her competitor, but Perry’s fanbase is already ‘roaring’ loud and clear as they (as of time reporting) have hoisted their leader to the digital tally’s top spot.

Yet, while the two pop princesses are getting the most buzz around their respective releases, fans of Tinashe are still moving and grooving to her Dream-produced cut ‘Superlove.‘  The song, also released last night, is getting a thumbs up from some of the same critics who can’t keep their fingers off the ‘play’ button to bump July’s other hot releases – Fergie‘s ‘M.I.L.F. $’ and Zayn‘s ‘Cruel.’

Now, with all heat coming to us at once, we must ask you – That Grape Juice faithful – who is your fave of the pack?

Cop a gander of Mariah Carey!

The elusive chanteuse covers issue 101 of Clash Magazine and certainly cuts a killer figure.

If there was any question as to whether the 46-year-old will be slowing down, she delivered an emphatic “no” will her many movements this year.

Beyond touring internationally and returning to Vegas, she recently re-upped her deal at Hallmark – for whom she’ll develop a series of projects for. She’s also set to star in her own E! docu-series ‘Mariah’s World.’

What’s more, after reuniting with LA Reid and signing with Epic Records last year, we’re hearing murmurs about new music too.

Busy times for a busy diva.

fergie thatgrapejuice hot 100

If this week’s Billboard Hot 100 is anything to go by, public has clearly forgiven Fergie for the musical misstep that was last year’s ‘L.A. Love.’

For, as the refreshed chart shows, the pop-rapper – whose latest number ‘M.I.L.F.$’ is rumored to be the kickoff of her long-awaited sophomore album ‘Double Dutchess’ – found herself nabbing her career best debut chart placement.

Indeed, after unveiling the tune’s accompanying video (featuring cameos from Ciara, Kim Kardashian, Chrissy Teigen, and more), the song raked in an impressive 65,000 sold its premiere week.

Curious to know where this handsome sum, in addition to its streaming, helped land it on this week’s Drake-led Hot 100?  Tuck in below to find out:

“Dynamite” is what many have deemed newcomer MAAD. Could she be next to blow?

We, here at That Grape Juice, wholly feel so.

In a sea of sameness, the New York bred beauty stands out from the pack. Powerfully.

It’s not just her statuesque aesthetic, but her narrative too.

Her ascend began in the world of modelling and to-date she has featured in publications such as ELLE and NYLON, while also fronting campaigns for the likes of Seventeen and Anastasia Beverly Hills.

Music, however, has always been the budding diva’s divine calling.

Indeed, when not spinning hits as one of NYC’s most sought-after DJ’s, the rising star logs in studio time with the likes of Claude Kelly, Jonas Jeberg, and The Vamp – the latter of who produced her infectious new single ‘Black Ice.’

The deliciously seductive cut has been garnering plenty of play around TGJ HQ over the last few weeks, but it’s its video that has our jaws ajar.

Directed by Creative Destruction, the visual sees MAAD sassily state her claim for superstardom…with an exclamation mark.

She slips, slides, and grinds with seasoned precision and pulls from her modelling skill set to ensure almost every frame is an editorial in itself.

With too many artists chasing the minimalist trend, this young lady re-affirms the importance of performance art. And we’re oh so sold on what she’s selling – as there’s not enough of it permeating the music landscape.

Both retro and refreshing.

MAAD’s EP ‘‘Lé Funk’ lands in September.

Until then, hit PLAY on ‘Black Ice’ above…
