Has the success of Beyonce‘s latest studio offering gone some way to overshadow Rihanna?

Hmmm…well that all depends on who you ask. For, while fans of the ‘Single Ladies’ siren would cite the 3 million units already moved by ‘Beyonce’ as confirmation of this, UK music lovers have gone some way to prove Rihanna’s popularity in the nation is far from over, even if it does pale in comparison to the ‘Queen B’s.

How?

After a lengthy break on the bench, ‘TGJ Replay’ is back!

Designed much like our ‘Retro Rewind’ and ‘From the Vault’ segments, ‘Replay’ is That Grape Juice‘s newest retrospective segment – a written quest, if you will, to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday.

Unlike its ‘Rewind’ and ‘Vault’ predecessors, ‘Replay’ looks to dust off and showcase entire albums (and eras) from a library of pop and Urban pop music hits.  As this weekend marks the 10th anniversary of her epic Super Bowl showing, today’s ‘Replay’ revisits ‘Damita Jo‘ – the ensuing era of pop icon Janet Jackson.

As Lady GaGa fans wait with bated breath for the singer’s next move, the star appears to be on a brief break of sorts.

The singer shared a shot of herself Las Vegas with none other than Britney Spears.

Mother Monster was in-town to watch the former stage blazer try her best at her Planet Hollywood residency.

Based on the clips we’ve seen, the show appears to offer little more than “that” 2007 VMA performance that sent shockwaves through the industry, however it appears GaGa had a genuinely enjoyable time.

She prefaced she shot above with…

Sweet.

As unfortunate as Britney’s current predicament is, we continue to hold a spec of hope that one day some day we’ll see (at least shades of) ‘Slave 4 U’ Brit back on the scene.

K.Michelle is having doubts.

No, not about herself, but about the industry she is currently thriving in, and the supposed ‘trickery’ pulled by her sister in soul, Tamar Braxton.

Indeed, in adding steam to baseless claims of ‘album-buying’ aimed at the ‘Love & War’ belle, Michelle’s brand new number ‘I Don’t Believe’ unveils the inner-workings of her mind, and see her address a number of hot topics currently surrounding her bourgeoning career.

Yes…even the Grammy snub.

The 90’s were overflowing with vocal groups. Last week saw us salute the males, so this week it’s the turn of the ladies. Today’s From The Vault pick comes courtesy of Xscape’ and their hit ‘My Little Secret’.
Served up as the second single from the band’s third and final LP ‘Traces Of My Lipstick’, the sultry groove, released in 1998, was produced by mentor Jermaine Dupri and written by band-member LaTocha Scott. It was the So So Def divas very last single together, as they decided to call it quit safter this release despite this single hitting #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #2 on the Hot Hip-Hop/R&B.
In similar fashion to TLC’s ‘Creep’ a few years back, ‘Secret’ deals with infidelity — this time with the ladies singing about the thrill sourced from entertaining a relationship with an « unavailable » lover.
Editor’s Sidenote: One can’t but smile at the brazenness of R&B singers for unleashing tracks like this, then flipping the script and singing about heartbreak and “triflin”. A little bit of everything for everyone, it seems…
Directed by Darren Grant, the video with its late-night-special feel, uses dark colors and shadows in a bid to accentuate the forbidden element of the lyrics. The soulful belles look particularly stunning in what is arguably their most celebrated visual.
With each release, Xscape had managed to gradually impose their brand of pure-R&B and we feel like, had they continued pushing through, they would have delivered even bigger classics for the genre, especially in a post-The Boy Is Mine world where all eyes were on Rhythm & Blues music.
Anyhow, today we’re tipping out hats to the ladies of Xscape for the gems they did deliver.
