This week’s From The Vault comes courtesy of Michelle Williams and her 2008 debut secular solo single ‘We Break The Dawn.’
After the end of Destiny’s Child, the ladies went on with their respective careers: Beyonce pursued acting and of course music; Kelly Rowland serviced her sophomore effort ‘Ms. Kelly; and, to everyone’s surprise, Michelle released her first non-gospel project, the aptly-titled ‘Unexpected’. The electro-tinged ‘Dawn’ served as its lead single.
Penned by Solange Knowles and produced by Wayne Wilkins and Adam Frampton, Michelle’s first solo foray into the mainstream arena saw her score a US Hot Dance Airplay chart-topper. The song also managed a Top 50 placing on the Official UK Singles Chart. It never charted inside the US Billboard Hot 100 and wasn’t exploited the way it could have been overseas. Occurrences some cite politics and a lack of adequate promotion to explain.

Directed by Phil Griffin, the track’s visual saw Williams and her dancer friends turn up on empty night streets. Sporting a new look and a refreshed image, the songstress looked like a million bucks in the visual which reached #1 on the MTV Base video countdown chart.
After returning to faith based music with her fourth effort ‘Journey To Freedom’, it seems Williams secular days are gone. Arguably prematurely, as ‘Unexpected’ makes for a compelling listen; one that showcases the singer’s versatility and viability as a solo star.
Still, we’d like to know, would YOU be up for an ‘Unexpected’ follow up? Or is Michelle strutting her destined lane already?
For many a Beyonce fan, Montina Cooper is familiar name, face, and voice.
Over the last decade, the seasoned singer-songwriter has been a integral member of The Mamas – Queen Bey’s sassy backing group.
Together, they’ve toured the globe countless times over and helped shape the sound and brand that defines Beyonce as a live performer.
While still enjoying and excelling in that role, Cooper is now stepping into the solo spotlight.
With new album ‘Closer’ creating all the right waves, That Grape Juice caught up with the seasoned songbird to chat about the project and much more. What

It’s been a week since the 2016 BET Awards and, like many, we’re still on a high from what was a phenomenal show.
That Grape Juice was in the house for what the annual special’s 16th anniversary. And while on the carpet, we caught up with a host of notable names.
‘Chasing Destiny’s’ Frank Gatson chatted it up about what to expect from June’s Diary – the girl group he created alongside Kelly Rowland on the show.
Akon also dished on winning the Global Good Award ahead of the telecast; Jacob Latimore spilled on new music; and ‘Rise Up’ songstress Andra Day opened up about her relationship with Stevie Wonder.
The likes of ‘Empire’s Yazz The Greatest, LeToya Luckett, Beyonce stylist Ty Hunter, Rae Sremmurd, Anderson, .Paak and more also showed love.
Set to air June 28th live from LA Live at the Nokia Theater, the show promises a host of must-see moments – especially as it’s the 15th anniversary of the Urban extravaganza.
To celebrate the major milestone, That Grape Juice are counting down our Top 15 BET Awards Moments from past ceremonies.
Now, it would appear a role on music drama ‘Empire’ is on the cards for the songstress (who is also working on a new album).
After teasing involvement in the Lee Daniels drama earlier this month, the singer all but confirmed her recruitment by joining the cast at the FOX Upfront presentation today.
The press event, which is held to tout the shows on the 2015-2016 schedules, is typically only attended by the talent on the programming being promoted. And per the snaps above and below, a roll-call of ‘Empire’s stars populated every pic B-Rocka featured in; stars such as Taraji P. Henson, Jussie Smollett, Jennifer Hudson, and Timbaland – who executive produces the music on the series.
Put simply, it’s highly unlikely Ms. Norwood was there for fun. Fingers crossed a formal announcement is made soon.
As R&B hitmakers go, few boast the credentials Rico Love has.
The skilled songwriter and producer has been at the helm of chart smashes from the likes of Usher, Beyonce, and Kelly Rowland.
However, in recent years, he’s chosen to focus on his own record label Division 1 and his rap career (new album ‘Turn The Lights On’ arrives May 19th).
And there’s a reason for it, which he shares in a candid new interview with our friends over at The Boombox.
Indeed, the weekend brought with it the 2015 Grammy nominations unveiled, as per usual, of a nomination special weeks before the actual showing. But, what also comes with the ‘per usual’ showing are the jaw-dropping surprises, snubs, and all out “shut-outs” that accompany the annual spectacle.
Always a heated debate-starter, the coveted tally saw the likes of Trey Songz, Lana Del Rey, Justin Bieber, Jason Derulo, Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez, and Michael Jackson all go without mention.
For Bieber, whose manager made headlines for his rant regarding his 2013 Grammy shutout, this would be a third-go-round despite consistently clocking some of the year’s biggest hits.
Tuck in below for a list of other surprises and snubs:
