christina aguilera hot 100 1999

Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.

So, just as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’  allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.

On this #TBT we press play on splash hit ‘Genie In A Bottle,’ the official debut single from pop powerhouse Christina Aguilera.  Dominating radio and video countdowns alike, the teen pop tune – the inaugural offering popped from her self-titled debut album – shot to #1 on the Hot 100 and was the first of three chart-toppers from the project.

Dethroning then chart-champion Will Smith‘s ‘Wild Wild West’ and fending off competition from the likes of Enrique Iglesias, Destiny’s Child, and more, ‘Genie’ granted Aguilera an impressive 5 week run in summer 1999 and marked the third time that year a female debuted at #1 with her first single (see:  Britney Spears’ ‘Baby…One More Time’ and Jennifer Lopez‘s ‘If You Had My Love’).

It was simply a good year for pop!  Check below to see what other familiar faces you see in the top 20 this week in 1999:

Pop titan Lady Gaga continues her image renaissance ahead of her hotly anticipated comeback.

The ‘Bad Romance’ belter appears on the double cover of CR Fashion Book‘s latest issue – sans any retouching.

Speaking on the Gaga’s selection, the publication’s creator Carine Roitfeld explained:

“Lady Gaga perfectly represents what I mean by the classic eccentric to me. She is completely Gaga, but she is also a lady. In her music and art, she is so creative, always pushing the envelope . . . And yet she is classically trained, as well. As we saw with the jazz music, she can be both the modern pop star and still play the classic songs, giving them a modern twist. That is always what I love.”

She elaborated on the singer’s appearance as a bride on the covers:

“I decided to style her in that way for two reasons: The obvious one, of course, is that she is getting married soon, but also it represents how in this new era in her career, how she has come to marry these different sides of herself—how she has become free.”

Gaga herself chimed in about being musically liberated – thanks largely to ‘Cheek to Cheek,’ her Grammy winning Jazz album with Tony Bennett.

“I’m that girl who’s nice and sweet, but I can put it down hard yeah”

Ciara belts these words in new song ‘One Woman Army‘ and today proved that she lives by them too.

During a visit to CBS studios this morning, the R&B chanteuse offered a feisty-firm response to former fiance Future following his public comments about her new beau Russell Wilson.

As widely reported, the rapper has slammed the songbird for allowing her Seattle Seahawks boyfriend so close to their one year old son – Future Zahir. A sentiment (randomly) echoed by Atlanta rapper T.I.

Until this point, Ci – whose new album ‘Jackie’ arrived in May – has maintained a dignified silence. However, that was shattered in the classiest of ways today during her sit-down with Gayle King.

Lana-Del-Rey-for-tgj

Simply put:  Lana Del Rey is was winning.

Courtesy of the warm reception to her latest “trap-pop” single ‘High By the Beach,’ the first release from her forthcoming LP ‘Honeymoon’ (Sept. 18), the singer-songwriter was greeted by a number of reasons to celebrate including:

  • 2nd highest debut of 2015 on the Hot 100
  • Her second top 10 single on the Hot 100
  • Highest debut of her career on the Hot 100
  • Highest first week sales of her career

Reported as moving an impressive 248,000 digital downloads its first week of release, the song’s accompanying music video would’ve also helped hoist it to top 10 glory with nearly 7 million streams in less than 5 days (as of time reporting).

But, just as Rey and team began popping bubbly to celebrate the aforementioned, Billboard retracted the stats with a crushing update that revealed her digital download numbers were barely a fourth of the originally touted figure.

First forecasted to debut at #7, tuck in below to see where she landed on this week’s Hot 100 and see The Weeknd‘s continued domination…
