Save for ‘Off To The Races’ and a few select others, Lana Del Rey songs have always struggled on a melodic tips, serving sweet hooks but dull verses.

Fortunately for the producers of new movie ‘The Great Gatsby’, the cut she recorded for their soundtrack stands as one of the ‘select few’, perfect from start to finish.

Named ‘Young & Beautiful‘, the Rick Nowels assisted jam becomes available to purchase with the rest of the flick’s soundtrack on May 7th.

However, if you’re the kind who tries before you buy, enjoy the romantic number for free below…

For many, the disbanding of Danity Kane will forever remain one of Pop’s biggest tragedies. However, in snaps that will no doubt delight fans, two of the group’s integral components, Aubrey O’Day and Dawn Richard, continue to mend fences.

The pair shared shots of themselves catching up on Instagram over the weekend; Richard initially took to Twitter writing that she was in a music vibe session, later re-tweeting the Insta pics of her and Aubrey revealing that they had “beautiful time” and great conversation.

Needless to say, we’re filing this in the “things we love to see” folder. Naturally, the snaps will send speculation into overdrive regarding a DK reunion. And while, like the masses, we’d love to see one, we suspect that chapter is closed for some (if not all) of the ladies. Still, we have moments like these to reminisce on….

Before the arrival of Nicki Minaj, Lady GaGa, Rihanna made up the line up of today’s Pop It Girls, a decade ago saw Beyonce (the soloist) enter territory owned by Jennifer Lopez, Ashanti….and Rhode Island native Blu Cantrell.

While her Mathew Knowles backed ascent saw her outperform and outpace the trio, Beyonce may remember a time when Blu stood as her closest competitor, by way of similar aesthetics and a joint collaborator in Sean Paul.

This week, in what will no doubt take many back to the point in time, Blu has made a surprising return to the charts with her single ‘Breathe’.

This, swiftly denied by ‘sources’ close to her camp.

Much like our ‘Retro Rewind’ and ‘From the Vault’ segments, readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.  So in a quest to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday we introduced a new retrospective segment – ‘TGJ Replay’.

Unlike its ‘Rewind’ and ‘Vault’ predecessors, ‘Replay’ looks to dust off and showcase albums (and eras) from a library of pop music hits.  While many look forward to celebrate 4/20 for reasons that shan’t be mentioned, we music lovers marked it as what would’ve been the 62nd birthday of R&B legend Luther Vandross.  Join us as we reflect on his greatest hits…

Guess which singer/actress was snapped on her way out of an East Coast nightclub last night.

Hint: The last year has seen her get considerably close to Rapper Future. So close, he is credited as one of the writers on her latest studio album.

Not sure who it is?

Pop rebel Pink is presently pleasing fans on her worldwide ‘Truth About Love Tour’.

The trek, which was mounted in support of her chart-topping album of the same name, sees the 33-year-old journey through hits of yesteryear as well some of her more recent gems. One of the tour’s most notable moments, though, is the star’s show-stopping rendition of 2002 smash ‘Just Like A Pill’.

A US smash (peaking at #8 on the Hot 100), the cut achieved its greatest success in the UK where it became her first number one single. More, than anything, it sits in the upper echelon of quality material Ms. Moore has released in her 12 years plus on the music scene — which in itself is mega feat.

Back in 1987, two artists from two different arena’s joined forces to deliver a smash hit single which serves this week’s From The Vault pick: it’s Aretha Franklin and George Michael‘s still-stunning ‘I Knew You Were Waiting For Me’.

‘Waiting’ was written by Simon Climie and Dennis Morgan for Franklin’s 1986 release, ‘Aretha’ and saw freshly-solo-star Michael collaborating with one of his idol. After the bubblegum-fest that was Wham!, George started channeling his inner Soul Man which can be heard in this track as he has no problem whatsoever keeping up with the greatest who ever done it, the Queen of Soul herself.
A US-meets-UK collaboration, the track lived up to its international status as it was a chart-topper in both those countries. On the UK front it was Michael’s third in a row and weirdly enough Aretha’s only #1 record to this day; the duet was her seventeenth Top 10 hit and Michael’s first since calling it quits with Wham. It was also a #1 record in Ireland and Australia and a Top 10 in Canada and Germany.
The video is primarily set in a screening room where past videos of the seasoned vocalists are shown alongside footage of notable duos like Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell and Sonny & Cher. Midway through, Aretha and George get together and jam to their uplifting tune resulting in an iconic moment in the vein of those they paid homage to in the first place.
“Unusual” pairings like this excite in earnest. Indeed the collision of two worlds on one common ground represents what music should be all about: an art that brings people together. With the likes Miguel and Kelly Clarkson reportedly “trying to make it happen”, let’s pray other artists follow suit. We’d be lying if we said we hadn’t made a few dream combos in our heads already (Janet Jackson and Bebel Gilberto, Mariah and ), but we want YOU to tell us:
What would be your dream pairings of artists from different genres?
