Despite boasting appearances from One Direction, Rihanna, Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj, it seems last night’s VMAs is one MTV won’t be too pleased about today.
This, because after pulling in an audience of 12.4 million last year, last night’s show welcomed a less than stellar 6.1 million, likely to have been affected by the momentum garnered by close competitor, President’s Obama‘s speech at the Democratic National Convention.
The Hollywood Reporter explains:
“About 6.1 million viewers tuned into Thursday night’s telecast of the VMAs, dropping more than half its audience from last year’s record 12.4 million haul. In the network’s target 12-34 demo, the VMAs drew a 5.3 rating.
Year to year, the VMAs were down more than 50 percent in total viewers.”
