After a lengthy spell on the bench, August Alsina sent fans into a state of shock when he unexpectedly announced ‘StateofEmergency’ – his official third album.

Released June 26 (just a week after being announced), the LP came as his first studio effort in nearly 5 years and first off the Def Jam imprint (after a highly publicized fall out with the label).  Packed with a whopping 27 songs, ‘StateofEmergency’ was preceded by the release of housed cuts ‘Rounds,’ ‘NOLA,’ and ‘Sincerely’ and boasts names like Yo Gotti, Tink, Lil Wayne, and Juicy J on its list of features.

Yet, despite immediately shooting to #1 on iTunes R&B charts (where it sits at writing), the minimal warning ahead of the set’s unveiling has arguably worked to its detriment if industry analyst predictions are to be believed.

After years of swirling rumors, singer August Alsina – via an interview with Angela Yee – has confirmed he had a love affair with Jada Pinkett Smith.  As if that wasn’t enough to get tongues wagging, the 27-year-old singer says her Academy Award-nominated husband, Will Smith, allegedly gave the relationship his blessing.

In the interview (published June 30), Alsina said:

“I actually sat down with Will [Smith] and had a conversation due to the transformation from their marriage to life partnership … he gave me his blessing.”

Reportedly introduced to Pinkett, 48, in 2015 by her son Jaden, Alsina detailed how he and the actress became so close he fell in love with her.

“I totally gave myself to that relationship for years of my life, and I truly and really, really deeply love and have a ton of love for her. I devoted myself to it, I gave my full self to it — so much so to the point that I can die right now and be okay with knowing that I truly gave myself to somebody.”

That’s not all he said.  See the interview that has everyone talking.

In keeping with that energy, he ups the total to five with the release of new cut, ‘Sincerely.’

A heartfelt ode to his nieces he’s been raising since the untimely passing of their parents, the emotional tune sees Alsina dedicate each verse to a different niece.  On the last verse, the 27-year-old sings:

“Dear Kay-kay What can I say, say, say? / Ever since your first day / It’s like you’ve been here before Was here beyond your days / Truly you move to the beat of your own drum And your own parade,” he croons.

From health issues to money woes and family troubles, August Alsina‘s life challenges have been quite well-documented over the years.  Yet, despite the hardships, the 27-year-old vows to persevere – a declaration the ‘Testimony’ singer made plain in his motivational new single, ‘Today.’

“I’m gon’ work like they gon’ put me in the ground today / I ain’t certain they won’t put me in the ground today,” sings Alsina. “Still goin’ hard everyday, tryin’ to overcome, that’s real / Still speaking from the heart, tryin’ to give the people something they could feel.”

The empowering anthem was accompanied by the release of the trailer for ‘The Rise of August Alsina:  stateofEMERGEncy.’  An autobiographical documentary, the film will chronicle the performer’s rise from the hard streets of New Orleans to the top of R&B charts and every obstacle he faced before, during, and since.

It’s hard to believe this week marks 5 years since August Alsina exploded onto the R&B music scene with his debut album, 2014’s ‘Testimony.’ Since that point, the now-26-year-old may have seen the heights of fame and, conversely, experienced dizzying personal lows, but his resilience (he says) is best evidenced in his push to release new music.

The latest comes in the form of the music video for ‘Footsteps.’  A heartfelt number, the funeral-inspired visual is believed by fans to be a nod to the loss of his sister (who passed away from cancer) and his current responsibility as her children’s legal guardian.
