Beyonce blazed back onto the scene with her seismic seventh studio album ‘Renaissance’ and has royally rocketed straight to the top of the Billboard 200.
If you weren’t dancing to this song 16 years ago, were you even on this planet?
Today’s From The Vault pick comes courtesy of the Pop force of that time – Justin Timberlake.
This week’s pick is the super slick ‘SexyBack.’
Served up as the first taste of JT’s 2006 sophomore album ‘FutureSex/LoveSounds,’ ‘Sexy’ was produced by Timbaland – who also features on the song.
The EDM-tinged single not only ushered in a new sound for Timberlake, but it was also very influential for the music landscape at large from 2006 to the end of the decade.
A global success, the track reached the #1 spot in the UK, Germany, Australia, and Canada. It spent seven consecutive weeks at the top of the US Billboard Hot 100.
Additionally, ‘Sexy’ snagged a GRAMMY in 2007 for Best Dance Recording.
Michael Haussmann directed its accompanying visual, which featured Justin and actress Elena Anaya as two rival spies. Lensed in Barcelona, the clip successfully translates the song’s hyper-hectic sonics onto film.
The NSYNC alumnus won the most prizes at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards thanks to this video alongside those for subsequent singles ‘My Love’ and ‘What Goes Around.’
*********
15+ years after literally ruling the charts, it seems the masses are not as on board with Timberlake as they once were.
From being branded a “culture-vulture” from some corners of the net to being held accountable for the way he treated both Britney Spears and Janet Jackson in the early 00s, it looks like the modern Pop cultural sphere is not quite ready to let JT’s early-day mishaps slide.
For yours truly, who has long been chanting #JusticeForJanet and questioned the seemingly automatic placement of Timberlake above his more naturally gifted peers, it’s slightly perplexing that this reckoning is so…retroactive.
Still, hits have been made and history has been written. So, kudos to Mr. Timberlake for dropping this banger.
