Flashback to 2001 and Jennifer Lopez was the reigning queen of the music charts. One of the hits that made her domination undeniable was the Murder Remix of ‘I’m Real’ from her ‘J. Lo’ album of 2001. The track featured fellow has-been Ja Rule and held the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for 5 non-consecutive weeks.
However, the track was not without controversy. According to the song’s producer, Irv Gotti, Lopez was anything but real about how ‘I’m Real’ came into existence. Not only did she use the exact same sample for the original version of ‘I’m Real’ that Mariah Carey used for her song ‘Loverboy’ but Lopez also copied another Carey song for the remix. The Murder Remix of the record was specifically crafted by Gotti to sound exactly like Carey’s ‘If We (Ft. Ja Rule)’ in accordance with the instruction of Carey’s ex-husband Tommy Mottola who was supposedly trying to sabotage her career at the time. Hence, Lopez stole from Carey twice for the same song and started what would become a decade long feud. {Source}
Unoriginality aside, this was a great record and a monster hit. It’s astounding how the times have changed with both Lopez and Ja Rule’s more recent material being rejecting from the bargain bins across the globe. O well at least they could look back at their better years via Youtube.

R&B star Alicia Keys sported a noticeable ‘bump’ while performing here in the UK at BBC Radio 1’s ‘Big Weekend’ last night. If indeed with child (as increasing chitter-chatter suggests), Keys’ longtime boyfriend producer Swizz Beats is believed to be the father.
In light of all the drama surrounding their relationship, this latest development is certainly interesting to say the least…
This week’s throwback From The Vault clip needs no introduction. A classic if there ever was one, Mary J. Blige‘s 1992 smash ‘Real Love’ will indeed remain etched in R&B history forever.
Fantasia and her family will be returning to the small screen for season 2 of hit reality show ‘Fantasia For Real’.

Season 2 of ‘Fantasia For Real’ is set to premiere Summer/Fall 2010.

Though I’m a little cheesed off that her album likely won’t be released until then, it’s great to see Fanny keeping her name out there. With the show being such a hit, why stop now, particularly when the first season went out on such an open-ended note? More power to her…
R&B star Brandy was spotted jogging at Runyon, Canyon earlier this week, as cameras filmed her for her new VH1 reality show ‘Family Business’ (which premieres April 11th). Ms. Norwood really has a great shape these days…
The official trailer for TLC’ star Chilli‘s new reality show, ‘What Chilli Wants’, surfaced today. After initially being rather sceptical about the VH1 show (which debuts April 11th), I must say I will definitely be tuning in after watching the trailer (courtesy of our good friend Necole Bitchie). Check it out below:
Toni Braxton has revealed that she is currently working on a reality show which will air on Bravo’s fall season lineup. In a recent interview with Rap-Up.com, the contralto spoke about the project which will feature her family, including her sister/backup singer, Tamar. Here is what Braxton had to say below:
There have been murmurings for sometime now about Brandy starring in her own reality show. As it turns out, the Grammy Award winning singer will be joining her brother Ray J, as well as their mother and father – Sonja and Willie Norwood, in a new VH1 reality show. Check out the synoposis below (spotted over at our good friend’s Concrete Loop):
Siblings Brandy and Ray J Norwood are famous for their incredible vocal talent on the stage and screen. But they wouldn’t be anywhere without the support and guidance of their parents – entertainment manager and mom, Sonja and talented musical father, Willie Norwood. Viewers will get a first hand glimpse into the lives of the Norwood family unit and their family business – Rn’B Productions. Run by Sonja, Rn’B Productions features an impressive roster of musical artists including Brandy, Ray J and their father Willie, who also serves as the company’s vocal coach. But with Sonja ready to take a step down, Brandy and Ray J will have to fill her shoes quickly all the while taking the family business to the next level. Will they have what it takes to continue to stay in the limelight while growing an entertainment empire?
The reality route seems to be the way to go for many an artist these days. Let’s just hope the show, which debuts April 11th at 9pm, is more in the vein of Monica’s or Fantasia’s, than any of Ray J’s VH1 outings.
