Freshly Squeezed: Introducing…Matisse

Published: Wednesday 12th May 2010 by Sam

Hailed by industry heavyweights as ‘the next big thing’, 24 year old Brit Smith, more commonly known as Matisse, looks poised for a very successful 2010.

The latest addition to the Jive Records roster, Matisse is no stranger to the limelight. Indeed, she named herself after one of her favourite painters who refused to give up as a struggling artist. Some may remember the stunning starlet‘s first industry outing as one half of sisterly duo Brit & Alex back in 2008. While that project didn’t take off – resulting in the sisters disbanding, Matisse the solo star looks set for a much brighter future, if the phenomenal reception to her infectious debut single ‘Better Than Her’ is anything to go by.

So much so is the buzz surrounding the singer that many of music’s biggest hitmakers are queuing up to work on her debut LP. The following are but a few of them:

“Matisse is one of my favourite new artists. She brings a playful energy back to pop music reminiscent of early Madonna” – Kevin Rudolf

“She’s a natural superstar who’s a deadly combo of sexiness and class.…” – Dallas Austin

“Matisse is an artist with the goods! … Someone to keep an eye out for in 2010!” – Tricky Stewart

“Matisse is the complete artist. … [She] is the real deal!” – Harvey Mason Jr.

Though born in Connecticut, Matisse’s teenage years were spent here in London – an experience which no doubt influences the international sound her music boasts; an honest (non-cliché) fusion of Pop, Electronica, and R&B. A fusion, I found, greatly demonstrated on the Dallas Austin produced ‘Lullabies, Chocolates & Lies’ – which you can listen to below.

A breath of fresh air, Matisse will no doubt be a name on the lips of many very soon!

Check out ‘Better Than Her’ and ‘Lullabies, Chocolates & Lies’ below:

  7. elleuk May 12, 2010

i agree with all the comments above, this aint rocking my world.
she should model, or go back to the studio and create somthing that doesn’t sound like the type of music that even britney spears would call unorginal.

“an honest (non-cliché) fusion of Pop, Electronica, and R&B.”

Sam, are you crazy? A bit addled in the brain? You must be because this is bland, routine and uninspiring at best.

I like Better than Her. It’s been on my playlist for a while now.
Her voice is nothing special, the song is a bit repetitive but I like where she’s coming from. Could use some improvement.

Her stuff has more substance than Ke$ha for sure. Can’t even compare the two 🙂

Can’t wait to see later stuff from her… as long as she doesn’t go into that “main stream” repetitive senseless stuff that other artists have succumb to.

    meh

  11. Glow In The Dark May 12, 2010

    She very beautiful.

And I also enjoy the majority of these songs. I just hope she doesn’t go “PopTart” on me. We hear enough of that s*** on the radio already.

    Miracles and success to her…

    *She’s*

  13. Aunt Jackie May 12, 2010

Sounds the same as everything else out right now. Nothing interesting about her, her voice or her style.

I am loving Better Than Her and as a pop fan that song leaves me wanting to hear more from Matisse. Good luck Matisse and don’t make us wait too long for more music!!!

As I was reading this post I got excited thinking I was going to hear something amazing and original. She just sounds like Kesha with a better voice. Sad that this is generating buzz.

I’m convinced Jive asked you guys to promote her…

  18. Shelby May 12, 2010

Well I think Matisse is a fab singer! Better than her is a very good catchy tune and I’m sure when Matisse releases an album then it will do very well. She’s young, very beautiful and has a unique voice. She will do well and I wish her the best of luck.
People always hate on artists when they first start out until that one tune hits #1 proving everyone wrong – (taking gaga for instance and now look how far she has come) -Matisse will be just the same but I’m sure she has better style than Gaga lol

  19. BEYONCE VS. THE WORLD May 12, 2010

    THIS H** IS AVERAGE

  20. l’il k May 12, 2010

  24. kveick May 12, 2010

    She’s very pretty

  25. Queen B May 12, 2010

‘loving both these songs – she’s got talent and i like her voice a lot

  26. All Ryght May 12, 2010

Am I the only one that thought this was Paris Hilton before even looking @ the name of the artist?

  27. BEYONCE VS. THE WORLD May 12, 2010

WE KNOW THIS B**** WILL FLOP

  28. Anon May 12, 2010

I had already dismissed this chick, but then I played Lullabies, Chocolates, and Lies while looking for some shoes. I must admit, it’s a catchy song. She has a pleasant voice. If she can combine her looks with more catchy pop songs like that, she may be on to something.

Sidebar: I’m amazed at how cynical some of these comments can be. I’ve got artists I really like too, but I’m ALWAYS looking for more. Just cause “Beydabess” doesn’t mean you can’t dare to like someone else. Lord knows after 3 minutes of her wailing at the top of her lungs I need to listen to someone with a gentler approach.

  29. Ally L May 12, 2010

One song does not define an artist. New artists have to put out something poppy just to get played. Go to her myspace (myspace.com/matissemusic) to listen to other songs. They’re good! The girl can sing. haters are losers!

  30. frankie May 12, 2010

sounds like a lack-luster jojo…hope she don’t fade into the background like jojo did…i give it 2.5 smooches

  31. Dominique May 12, 2010

i love both songs.. hope she does well in her career. i wont be rude like some of u… ugh #UnThinkable

  32. dyndyn May 12, 2010

ok TGJ…you are were doing well on my part with the thumbs up kelly thumbs down (even though harsh @ times) rih-rih…but this ish righ here cut your credibility down a few notches. The music isn’t horrible, but plz…’breath of fresh air?’ yeah? because we’ve never heard ish like this before. This chick sounds like the love child of stacie orrico + britney + kesha. next…

  33. Big Red May 13, 2010

Great song. I have been singing it all day. So much better than the nonsense that is on top of the charts now. Matisse is cool and edgy at the same time. A good role model as opposed to all the sleeze that is out there. Love her!!!

  34. ~TeAM WeeZY~ May 13, 2010

Um, what’s so special about her??? Her voice is below average IMO.

The songs are hot, but not because of her. The production on them both is phenomenal. You could put any voice on those well-produced tracks and it would still be hot. Sooooo, um……yeah.

  35. unknowntheartist May 14, 2010

Good to be able to finally put a face to the name, I remember the Brit and Alex track from the Step Up 2 soundtrack, thinking it was a bit deep for such a pop sounding duo. I guess she’s off on that track by herself now…

  36. Jeff May 14, 2010

I like them BOTH!!! Can;t wait for her to get here…puhleeeze do a Gaga colab!!

  37. CANYOUSEEIT June 3, 2010

    OK

  38. sohochic July 5, 2010

I just bought a film called My Last Five Girlfriends from Amazon, Brit rom com and she has the open credit track – STOP YOUR HUSTLE. If you want to see what this girl can really do, get it. It’s when she was with her sister (Brit/Alex). They have three songs according to credits but Hustle is ammmaaaazzzzzzzzzzzzing.
