Kelly Rowland Talks Album Sales & The Future With JET

Published: Friday 16th Dec 2011 by Sam

After the Platinum success of Kelly Rowland‘s ‘Motivation’ this Summer, it was a foregone assumption that the album that housed it (‘Here I Am’) would follow-suit.

Yet, as fate would have it, the LP went on to become more of a critical success than a commercial one. Having not really addressed the album’s standing publicly, Rowland finally shares her opinion on its performance in the latest issue of JET magazine.

Peep her comments on her present and future after the jump…

On The Sales of Here I Am:

“I was very happy with the album, period. It was a long time coming and I’m proud that Motivation was nominated for a Grammy; it’s been a really great year,” she says after a brief pause. Her tone holds a mixture of slight annoyance, understandable frustration and reasonable divatude.

On Perseverance:

“I can do whatever I want,” she declares. “I don’t allow anyone to put me in a box. Honestly, if I want to try something, that’s what I’m going to do.”

On Her New Years Resolution:

As the year wraps up, Rowland has one New Year’s resolution. “I want an album in the Top 5,” she shares. She’s scheming, plotting and gunning for No. 1.

On Direction of Her New Album:

“I would like to tell stories about grown woman things— what we go through every single day in relationships and love, empowering each other,” she shares.

Kudos to JET for going ‘there’. Yet, an even bigger nod to Kelly for not being subtle about her hunger to truly smash with the next record.

As echoed previously, it just so happens that ‘Here I Am’ (and more specifically, ‘Motivation’) have etched ‘Kelly the (potential) solo star’ into public consciousness. Hence, it’s left to the next project to really build on that foundation and dispel any doubt about her success this year being a fluke. That means hot material, hot promotion, and more hot performances.

Are you checking for Kelly next go round?

Your thoughts?

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/07/26/kelly-rowland-new-album_n_908996.html

and she wanna do ” female empowerment” themed songs again ?!

GURL BYE and FLY high UP in the sky and u still gonna cry for the rest of your LIFE !
you spent 15 years doing that , and u FLOPPED mad hard , so why you still insist on doing the same thing over and over again and again ?!

The definition of stupidity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. — Albert Einstein

and she want a top 5 album with an R&B album ?! where in planet mars ?! that’s not gonna happen GURL !! 😡

she lives in the country of DELUSIONAL and someone need to slap her and wake her UP !!

so bad she got a good voice , but the other parts of her body suffers from SEVERE AND CHRONIC STUPIDITY !

KELLY IS AN AMAZING ARTIST, I WILL ALWAYS LOVE AND SUPPORT HER …

    KEEP DOING YOU KELLZ …

  6. @VuyoZucch December 16, 2011

Kelly is a good singer, I feel her album ‘Here I Am’ could have sold more had it not gotten pushed back so many times, Commander, Grown Ass Woman, Forever and A Day, Rose Colored Glasses and Motivation were great songs and could have taken the whole album to the top but her label stalled. Her stint on X-factor will surely increase her popularity which may mean more album sales for her, that and the fact that she does a lot of collaborations. That’s the advantage she has over Michelle Williams.

  7. TruthTeller December 16, 2011

LMAO @ Smantha’s sugarcoating. U’re tryna make that piece of s*** taste like candy…. and u are obviously failing.

  8. A December 16, 2011

“I don’t allow anyone to put me in a box. Honestly, if I want to try something, that’s what I’m going to do.”

I guess that’s how she feels right now, because it doesnt seem she tried something personal with Here I am.

Lets hope her next album has hot and more unique music

  9. Dee December 16, 2011

Not trying to knock kelly shes very beautiful but her ablum was not good all of that pop bubble gum music ugh motivation was ok lay it on me was decent shs need to come harder real talk

  10. Matthew Charlery-Smith December 16, 2011

It’s hard to be “Motivated” (excuse the pun) to follow what KR is upto as it seems clear she’s not in tune with her fans. Her promotion is a mess, her new found OVERT sexuality is a turn-off and her music has become so unoriginal. I’m so disappointed to see her sitting down buck-naked in her album inlay booklet, why should I buy it? t’s like a mini Playboy mag! Is this how women express their womanhood? It’s not “Grown and s***” it’s cheap and tacky. Kelly ALWAYS had so much class before she became too fame hungry.

Her music has become MORE unoriginal as she’s continued. She’s NEVER topped the songs found on her 1st album, “Simply Deep”, “Heaven” “Obsession” in fact nearly EVERY song on that album is honest and deep. I miss that, her soulful voice fits so perfectly over melodic beats but her music has not suited her voice for ages.

She’s also gone back into, “My sister B, I love B, did I say B was my sister?” Why does she seem so insecure in her own name? Janet hardly ever spoke about Michael and they were REALLY family. Looking back it’s clear that Janet’s music is not as legendary as Michael’s but considering both their achievements and records it’s clear Janet gave Michael a hard time! True, Kelly has received an AMA, Grammy and Soul Train nod winning the latter but this could have been much better. If singles are ignored, ok, but entire albums? Not good, her UK chart position? Her huge gaps between videos and singles? Her almost no show on promotion?

I will add that her dance tracks have been legendary and she’s notched up 4 Top Tens in the UK one of them being number 1. But throwing When Love Takes Over on the album when it’s 2.5 years old is shoddy considering it was so long ago. Mel B (Scary Spice) took too long to release her “Hot” album and dropped it just before the SPice Girls dropped their last album…too long X interest lost = Chart Disaster!

Sam, you need to talk to her rather than giving us spin. It’s too clear, Rihanna may get a scalding which is somewhat deserved due to her slack content but Kelly artistically is in NO better position and she has a lot more talent!

  11. Love me December 16, 2011

@POp you stan for a Nocalist! Kelly doesn’t need to be like your Fav a Bandwagon Artist always doing what’s in Your Fav is doing what kelly did 3 years ago! No1 is checking for your favs Slow or urban tracks Bye! Yes kelly is struggling But she didn’t become Jay z mistress for a Deal!! Like seriously Why on earth would you sign a girl. With NOoOOOOOOOO talent she can’t dance or sing But yet you cut to talented chicks (C.milian. Teairra mari) to invest more money In Rihanna O_o how does that work? Rihanna only strong Point is her team other than that she has nothing else to fall on beside her Body!

  12. Love me December 16, 2011

Kelly is on the worst Label ever Like they don’t do s***? Remember when Shontelle got that HIT “Impossible” what did her Label do? They let her album depend on the first single success and let the 2nd single drown and releasing it months after the 1st similar to Kellys situation! Both only performed on Tv ONCE to promote the album . The problem is by the Label cus clearly both girls got it But Shontelle left label saying “It sucks balls” lmao maybe kelly would do the same

  13. quanberg December 16, 2011

    I can’t wait for Kelly’s up !!! I’m still jamming to Here I AM !!!

I WILL ALWAYS STAN FOR KELLY ROWLAND!!!1
    ROUND 4 LETS GO!!!

  17. Kingphoenix December 16, 2011

    @Pop Royalty

Yeah, you are going too far off on Kelly and i am not even that big of a fan…You can get a top 5 album with R&B if its good e.g. Beyonce (#1), Chris Brown(#1), Jill Scott(#1), and Marsha Ambrosius(#2) don’t sleep on R&B, after this dance music is dead and buried people will run back to R&B, it happens again and again…

If Kelly puts in work, and gets better people I think she will do really well, she showed me she has the potential with the success of” Motivation”, The solidity of “Feeling Me Right Now,” and her performance of “Down For Whatever” on German X-factor so I am definitely looking forward to it…

  18. College girl December 16, 2011

Yes… I will be supporting her. I am hoping she do an all r&b album this time around. Her next album needs to go in the direction of Ms. Kelly. & step your vocal game up Kelly! I don’t know how she’s gonna release another album & do Xfactor UK again next yr. It’s gonna be a complete disaster!

  19. cray December 16, 2011

    Round 4…:lets go Kelly!!!!

  20. Maurice A Williams SR December 16, 2011

This is really Kelly’s time to rein like the Queen she has become in every walk of life. I am truly looking foward to see what other blessing that her future holds. Kelly has proven to me that she is one Queen that every man would want, but there is one King that is patiently waiting after his great battle with in & out. It’s time for the healing process don’t you think?

  21. Girrrl December 16, 2011

This is kellys third album and shes been in the game 15 years and she’s STILL building her foundation?!?! B**** bye.

All she wants is a hit album. Not gonna happen. Motivation was her biggest hit and she still hasn’t sold 200k in her home country!! Tragedy!

Too many people are lying to her. Her voice is still pitchy after 15 years in the game, she still can’t stand on her own 15 years in the game (really who else is an opening act on a tour when they are supposed to be a veteran? Who else can’t perform alone on BET)

How the hell did she flop harder in the UK when she is on Tv there twice a week? #56!!!

Y’all know if Rihanna did those numbers y’all would have packed her bags and bought her a plane ticket back to Barbados.

Kelly does not have what it takes to be a solo star!

  22. pop royalty ( year OF 4 ) December 16, 2011

    @KINGphonix :

R&B is only and mainly honored in US ! lOVED by the “URBAN audience” to be specific ! but WW (U__________________________U) ………………….. u know it !

last time it was hot was in 2003/2004 in the days of “dangerously in love” and ” confessions” if u still remember those days !!

but it’s different now , R&B is slowly dying in the big pic cuz no one give a damn f*** about buying a f*****’ R&B album anymore !!! #realtalk #honesty !

KR is still building her fanbase and she still need to GET/go mainstream first then she can do whatever she desire after getting this job DONE !!

cuz she’s not that UNIQUE if we are talkin’ R&B big names ! and her R&B songs are not groundbreaking content-wise !! kinda predictable !

her first album was “IT” , but she lost her compass after that ….

she should have jumped on the dance bandwagons THE MOST among them girls , IDGAF about ppl say other BS , the b**** slayed and smashed with her dANCE songs , why she don’t capitalize on the dance genre ?!! WHY NOT ?!

she will be the hottest black female artist in doing that i’m sure , with club hits like this one :

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTyCiz1-Hf4

and STOP dreaming girl , DANCE music won’t EVER GET replaced by R&B ! wake UP !!

when R&B main artists are doing it , then it won’t FADE , not as soon as u think/wish !!!!!!!!!!!! WAKE UP !!
    back to kelly :

she tried R&B for 15 years , why cant she try a different thing this time ?!!

she got nothing to lose ! she is in the period , the greatest period , any artist can have , the period in which the artist should choose his/her direction and she chose going back to the same ole s*** ?!!

I’M done with this stupidity of HER , and i have her albums , so end this “you are going too hard on her” BS ! i hate , and i repeat, I HATE stupidity 😡

look at the definition of “stupidity” i posted above and look at her words and tell me what do u think !!! 😡

    and that’s my opinion !!

  24. swagg December 16, 2011

@ Love me what label is she on because if it is the same one with shontelle she does need to leave because shonetelle is mad talented and that song impossible was like a top ten on the billboard and she did have absolutely no promo her album should have been a hit at least gold same with kelly if she had the right promo and more singles and vids pushed

  25. Kingphoenix December 16, 2011

    @Pop Royalty

Boo why you so mad? I was only relating the R&B thing to the U.S., but now that you mention it R&B may not be that big world right now, but it was once especially in the 90’s including world wide…R&B only to start and die down when acts like Beyonce went more mainstream and became so successful that everyone else wanted to try it…I wasn’t saying dance music would fly of the earth but the trend will not be as mainstream as it is right now, Even Rianna only has two heavily dance theme songs on TTT the rest are Carribean/Urban-pop/and a little R&B

Kelly was one of the first to crossover Dance music to the mainstream pop with “Love Take Over,” but never reclaimed the success via the Flops “Commander”, your link, and “Down For Whatever”. It doesnt suit her and thats why “Motivation” is her biggest success since “Dilemna.” I put money on it that her next album will be if not all R&B mostly driven by it, and it will be more successful than “Here I am” because she knows what works for her.

And yes Kelly is mostly a flop because of her own fruition, but now she is finding here groove and is making progress…Unlike Ri Ri, who refuses to get her act together and could be sooooo much more than what she is. It’s no reason why Gaga or Katy is more successful than Rianna when her voice is suited for pop and so is her style…Honestly she could have been the next queen of pop but she didn’t want it enough…She settles for her f***** up 360 deal, her partying over professionalism, and her refusal to take dance classes and real vocal training like Gaga did… So if you wanna come for Kelly when she is actually trying versus Rihanna who told you herself she could give two shits then that’s your prerogative i guess…

  26. Cockiness December 16, 2011

POP what? what happen with you and rihanna?

  27. X,Y,”and Z” December 16, 2011

    @Sam –

1.) On The Sales of Here I Am:
“I was very happy with the album, period. It was a long time coming and I’m proud that Motivation was nominated for a Grammy; it’s been a really great year,” she says after a brief pause. Her tone holds a mixture of slight annoyance, understandable frustration and reasonable divatude.”

“Understandable frustration”?? Sam, name me/us(TGJ bloggers) a CD that, given as much hype, buzz, and “well-wishes” that “Here I am” was ‘so blessed’, flopped AS hard? ..YOU CAN’T..!!
“It’s been a great year”?! <—?????????????? Kelly's wigs are obviously 'ratched-on' a bit too tight: Hypoxia!

    2.)On Her New Years Resolution:
"As the year wraps up, Rowland has one New Year’s resolution. “I want an album in the Top 5,” she shares. She’s scheming, plotting and gunning for No. 1." <–@Kelendria Trene Rowland: NOT HAPPENING!! You've BEEN having this same 'reoccurring dream' for now (almost) a decade! And this, obviously delusional, "10-year Ground-Hog Bliss" began, back in 2002, with your released of "Simply Deep". And it FAILED! ..Miserably so! After all the hype, monies, and other 'intangible' resources lavished upon it, for it to THEN return those numbers?! ..FAILURE, of epic proportions!!

3.) "On Direction of Her New Album"
Sam, who cares????? After the album's horrid performance, do YOU really think Simon Cowell will renew her contract, or, at the very least, have her again so "prominently" placed? How can you have a judge/mentor of ANY talent who is such an obvious, without-question, failure? You can't! "Simply Come Dancing" has NOW 'transplanted and affixed itself' into the minds of the 'U.K. Viewership' as T-H-E vehicle for "consumer-discretionary-spending distraction". Sam, don't believe the spin bout her getting a new 2012 contract! Can YOU see Simon Cowell as a man who rewards failure? I can't!!

    4.) "On Perseverance"
(again) Sam, who cares???? Universal/Motown will soon offer her a "take-it-of-leave-it" 360 contract! Wasn't it, during a recent interview you had with her, when she then revealed that SHE IS paying for the "Lay it on me" video (or, for some other recent single of hers)? Long-story short? The 'writing' is on the wall! Because, as in the case of Ciara, even after she spent HER very-own monies, her label just couldn't be associated with her, and then severed all ties! Sam, "FATE" can no longer be "cheated", and that very same…'DESTINY' awaits the 30-something-year-old Kelly Rowland..!!

    X,Y,"and Z" — OUT..!!

  28. Steph December 16, 2011

Love Ms Kelly Rowland. Keep working hard girl, the sky is the limit.

  29. Laurie December 16, 2011

Ooo Kelly girl I love you but please no ore female empowering song you sista B bombarded us with this not you again please. There’re plenty of serious subject to talked about like “stole” was about bullying stuff like that would be cool !

  30. B December 16, 2011

I Love Kelly, but imma have to agree @GIRRL on this one. Kelly has been dissapoiniting album after album. Here I Am is not good at all, it is weak and bland and the material sounds so dull and boring with the exception of Motivation. She just doesnt have it. Plain and Simple. I Love Kelly, but her music doesnt pop and that’s all it is to it. Sorry Girl..

Beyonce just has it. She was born to be a star. Kelly is a star too in her own right, Just not a mega solo superstar.

  31. Taylor J December 16, 2011

The BEST SONG by Kelly Rowland is “UNITY”. Already tested and a proven hit record in Canada and Brazil … went straight to the Top 10 on radio with no video or promotional support ! “UNITY” is the answer for 2012 <3 <3

  32. williNalli December 16, 2011

Whoever is not checking for Kelly these days is f***ing DEAF and BLIND… Her music is the hottest right now… Everytime i listen to radio, i always feel like something is missing when i don’t listen to her songs.
Cannot wait for anything this woman comes out with, cuz you know she ALWAYS BRINGING OUT FIRE THESE DAYS…That’s how much she wants it…It’s only a matter of time.

  33. Myrl22 December 16, 2011

Will check for this woman till the day I die… I dont care what the haters are saying but in each and every song this girl sings I related to one day or another in real life. SHE IS MY GARDIAN ANGEL… So what her song doesnt do it for you. that shouldnt mean she should stop singing because you are not the only one that matters and by the fact that Motivation sold over 1mil is proof that your opinion is irrelevant. KELLY KEEP DOING WHAT YOU ARE DOING. YOU MOTIVATE ME EVERY DAY…. @KellyRow_Go ♥ U

  34. Rowldawg December 16, 2011

    @TAYLORJ Kill yoself! 🙂

  35. Last King December 16, 2011

Y’all n***** be so made at Kelly typing essay after essay and for what?
This happened to be the biggest era that Kelly has ever had as a solo artist regardless of success.

Sometimes things don’t go as planned but that doesn’t mean everything that has happened will go in vain. Kelly is slowly but surely coming into her own as a solo artist and yall are just gonna have to deal 🙂

  36. X,Y,”and Z” December 16, 2011

    @Last King re: Dec 16th, 6:00pm —

“This happened to be the biggest era that Kelly has ever had as a solo artist regardless of success.” <–0~O (Huh?! ..Saaaaaayy Whaaaaaaaaa?!)

  37. GREG December 16, 2011

the CD didnt do well cause she did no promotion…..period….she released the CD and performed it on the Bet Awards…..i didnt see her anywhere else but X factor

  38. Remey December 16, 2011

This was a good year for Kelly. This was definitely a REBUILDING year. In other words, Here I Am was not suppose to claim Kelly’s right as an ultimate star. It was suppose to establish her as a breakout artist,, which it did. She’s gotten the necessary hype that’s necessary to catapult her to bigger and better stardom.

She’s been working really hard on finding a solid sound that gives her ultimate crossover appeal. Goals like this take time. Look at Rihanna and Bey. It took them a while to garner such appeal.

Keep at it Kelly. Her next album must build off this success and mold it into a strategic promotional plan.

  39. M December 16, 2011

I feel we need to look at this from two points of view:

Commercially vs Artistically: R&B is not what it used to be in terms of the buying public cause you have to appeal to pre t*** and teenage white girls who are the main buyers of music these days. Honestly R&B is for Black audiences who do not buy records like they used to since they can illegally download it from the internet. Moreover, most R&B artists these days only want to talk about S**, further perpetuating that Black culture oversexualize everything. They feel like since s** sells, they must utilize it so they will not be dropped by the record companies for making R&B in a market that is not moving many units. Not many parents want their preteen – teenage girls buying an album promoting taking their clothes off and being down for whatever (Black nor white). What further complicates things is that an R&B singer like Adele can move units. Because of her race her music is marketed as POP and can cater to the buying public. In the past, R&B was socially conscious and uplifted people, it was more responsible and countered stereotypes and promoted higher ideals. Point is, if you want commercial success then you need to write songs that cater to the buying public, if you want to do R&B from an artistic standpoint, then use your voice to say something that doesn’t leave people feeling depraved after listening to it and consider becoming classified as a Pop artist instead!

  40. Independent Thinker December 17, 2011

Kelly is changing (and not for the better). I’ve always been such a supporter when it comes to her, but I do pray for discernment and I can not ignore what I’m beginning to see in Kelly. It’s interesting how often she’s been bringing up her “faith” as of late; interesting because when I look at Kelly now, all I see is conceit, compromise, contradiction and carnality. NONE of these things are reflective of the true and living God or His Holy Word; but they are all characteristics of that other one (yes, I’m talking about the anti-Christ, aka satan). So, I must pose the question: “What faith is she talking about?
Indeed it’s true that association brings on assimilation (consider Kelly’s social circle, as well as the people she admires and wishes to collaborate with). The only thing I can do is pray for Kelly. As for her new album, it will more than likely be the first Kelly Rowland album that I don’t purchase.

  41. Matthew Charlery-Smith December 17, 2011

    Independent Thinker, I agree!

  42. Quan December 17, 2011

Let me start off by saying this….I love this woman. I have been a fan since Destiny’s Child & simply Deep and I am not going anywhere. But here is the bad part about all of this, the way her projects are handled. Here I Am was a great album with great hits, but what it lacked was promotion. She barley was never out promoting this thing on television. Then she hoped on a tour but only went halfway through. Lets be honest Beyonce’s “4” damn near released every single off of their. SHoved it right down our throats. Kelly could have done the same thing because here songs were just as good. She could have performed on all types of shows and awards but what happened? Who is her management? If I had an artist I would be pushing them to be on any & everything to help build their brand. She can no longer live off a Destiny’s Child legacy and Here I Am has set the tone for her to only push harder. I marvel at what comes next from Kelly Rowland.

  43. VFB December 17, 2011

2011 WAS A TERRIFIC YEAR FOR KELLY BECAUSE OF PUBLIC EXPOSURE! GIRLFRIEND WAS EVERYWHERE AND ON EVERY MAGAZINE! SHE IS BEAUTIFUL, TALENTED, AND CAN ACT…..TRIPLE THREAT….SO KELLY BETTER GET TO WORK IN 2012 AND HANDLE HER BUSINESS….DO YOU KELLY AND LET THE MONSTERS BE ANGRY:)

  44. M December 17, 2011

Independent Thinker – I totally agree with your comments as well. I do belive however it the trick of the enemy by way of Record labels though. The fear that she probably had about being dropped again, probably steered her aw, ay from the original version and direction she was going. Remember she was coming out with clean songs like “On & On”, “Shake Them Haters Off” and “Commander”. When the buzz was not good surrounding it, the label pushed the album back and reworked it. It takes a mature believer to stand on what they believe and not sell out to record label.

  45. M December 17, 2011

Independent Thinker – The sad thing is, she says noone tells her what to do, but obviously something or someone has changed her! On the X Factor UK she promoted S** again and she is trying too hard to be someone she is cleatly not. I think Kelly loves God, but is not MATURE, she has a cultural Christian viewpoint vs a Kingdom mindset. Cultural Christianity says my actions do not affect others, its selfish in nature, and it leaves you open for various belief systems that are distinctly contrary to Christ. This is why you see so many people who claim to have grown up in the Church, acting as if what they do and say have no consequence to GOD. The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom and the straight and narrow path is what most do not want to follow. Unfortunately, it is quite dangerous to be in a backslidden state when you die or Christ returns. We do need to pray for Kelly Rowland. First pray for her to really trust God to make her who He called her to be. Secondly, pray that she have the courage to obey all that He says. Third, pray that her measurement of success is not based on a temporal worldly perspective, but on an eternal one. Finally, pray that she gets a support circle that is able to hold her accountable toward spiritual maturity.

I agree with those who says its all promotion. Remember the last 15 years B’s dad was her manager & not promoting her at all. So in a way this is her breakout CD but her new label botched it. Before nicki minaji came out girl was on everyone’s album hyping her up & getting her name out. When B, Ri, or Jay z promote an album they release 4 songs right after another. I never knew commander was released AND I have XM radio! She dropped motivation in the Spring & it was HOT! They didn’t drop Lay it on me til the Fall. Who the hell does that? P*** poor management that’s who. Then she went on tour to promote another artist.

She should have released motivation. After it was a success she should have did a flurry of media events. Good morning America, 106 & park and etc. while doing that lay it on me should have dropped 4-6 wks after motivation. Album dropped 2-4 week later. Then Grown ass woman should have dropped as the national female anthem.

For her next album she should collab w lil Wayne, Breezy, kanye

    Cont.,,

Get some big names on his top songs so the radio will play it. That’s what works for her. Like this had eve. Delima had Neely. Motivation had lil Wayne. Then once she has a huge following do only solo work w no collabs.

Girl can sing & perform. I went to the CB concert she was great!! She is more talented than RiRi hands down.

She decided to sell s** because it sells. Riri B & etc sold s** appeal & still do. Girls who don’t like jeniffer Hudson fantasia & etc where are they? At the bottom of the charts. Even rappers are selling it. Brit Spears ( love her too death) made 70 million take home pay for selling it.
