March 27th 2008 saw a Beyonce number named ‘Beautiful Nightmare’ surface online and “break the internet” as anticipation for her third studio album ‘I Am…Sasha Fierce’ intensified.
Months later would see the cut’s official version emerge under the name ‘Sweet Dreams’ and appear on the first half of the aforementioned double-disk album.
Today, fans of the song and singer will learn that the song took no more than fifteen minutes to record.

The bop’s builder Rico Love revealed that the singer’s courteous nature is the real reason it was recorded. Indeed, he shares that Beyonce braved one of the worst storms in Miami’s history to reach them as she did not want to renege on her promise to meet him at his studio.
Beyonce shows up, in full Beyonce mode – hair done, makeup, shades, high heels — she’s like, ‘I’m so sorry guys! I cannot stay because Jay Z has a concert, but I didn’t want to not come, because I know you guys have been waiting all day.’ She was super sweet. And I said, ‘I wrote this song for you, would you like to listen to it at least?’
The singer loved the song so much that she recorded it in fifteen minutes, thanked Love and made her back into the storm to catch her husband’s show.
The song has sold over 2 million units in the U.S. since its release and followed the release of her last #1 single in the market, ‘Single Ladies.’
It is IMPOSSIBLE to record a song in 15 minutes.
You people need to stop with the creative Beyonce worship.
With the tons of background vocals and vocal layering that took place in that song….the only thing Beyonce could have probably done in 15 minutes was a demo of the lead vocal so she could take it with her and record the whole thing with her engineer on her own time.
The background vocals ALONE on that track must have took upwards of two hours.
Not necessarily true. If this was the 90’s, then I would agree with you, but engineering has taken the place of background singers and multiple takes. All she had to do was record the background one time and the engineer was able to copy and paste it throughout the entire track, multilayer it while tweaking the key of her voice on each track creating flawless harmonies. That’s no shade, it’s just the way that music is recorded now.
I’m an engineer which is why i’ve said this.
Recording vocals take time especially songs like this. A song like My Heart Will Go on could be recorded in one take.

15 minutes is BEYOND AN EXAGERRATION!
it is NOT possible to record a song in 15 minutes. As someone who personally works at a studio with some of the best, perfect pitch artists…15 minutes wouldn’t even allow enough time for Beyonce to listen back to the vocals she recorded after each take. I am sure Beyonce did it quickly, probably in an hour and perhaps Rico Love was being facetious and said 15 but as someone who works with professionals, it’s just not possible. Even if Beyonce didn’t playback her vocals for a listen, every studio has quirks that happens before recording, during recording after and etc. While yes it is possible to record something in a key, tweak the key and create flawless if you mean robotic and unnatural vocals, anyone who is used to a studio or has an engineering ear can hear that this is NOT what Beyonce is doing. She records all of her background harmonies. Now what probably DID Happen is that the lead vocal was probably recorded in 30 minutes but then again, I’ve had great singers with good pitch in a studio and the song took 45mins to an hour to do WITHOUT background vocals. And then take in consideration that Beyonce does not know the lyrics of the song so she would most likely be reciting off a paper or listening by ear.
And furthermore to add to what I just said…Here Rico Love states it took 30 minutes. I’m willing to bet the only thing he remembers is that it was quickly done, but the record was definitely not recorded in 15 minutes.
“Sweet Dreams” was done on the second day I worked with Beyoncé. The first session I did with her was a song called “Save The Hero.” The second session she was like seven hours behind because of the weather. That was the same night JAY Z and Mary J. Blige were opening up their tour in Miami. Beyoncé came down. She was in full Beyoncé mode and was on her way to the concert, but stopped by the studio just to apologize for missing the session. She wasn’t really there to hear music, because she had to be at JAY’s show. I asked if I could just play one record. She heard it and looked at her cousin Angie and was like “How much time do I got left?” Angie said she only had like an hour. Beyoncé took her earrings and heels off and went in the booth. The record was done in about 30 minutes.

You can record a lead vocal demo in 15minutes. Which is likely what happened. Then the song is re-recorded at a later date. the demo “beautiful nightmare” leaked online. Then when the demo was cleared. Beyonce would have recut it added harmonies and really made the song her own.
Sam smith, re recorded stay with me about 7 times until the final vocals were piece to together for the final mix.

‘Sweet Dreams’ was originally leaked a day after it’s recording in March 2008, under the title ‘Beautiful Nightmare’ prior to the IASF release. That version had less layering and was a demo so I believe that is what Rico is referring to.

i’m also a recording engineer, writer, and vocalist who has completed a song in 15 minutes before, full background vocals and leads. Sweet Dreas actually contains vocals pre-recorded by Rico Love so Beyonce just added her leads and doubled his vocals. Of course, this is not for everybody. The artist, producer, and engineer must be very skilled to do quality work that fast…in this case, they all were. Most of what you hear on the final song was probably done in post-editing and mixing.
But, even if that’s the case, self-titled is still stalled at 3.8m WW. The gimmick couldn’t help it anymore.
